least seven and probably ten lives
were snuffed out and property loss
estimated as high as $30.000. 000
was entailed In a fire this morning
which destroyed the Kqultable Lit?
Insurance building, from eight to
twelve stories high, and all of tin
other Btructures in the same block,
hounded by Cedar, Pine and Nassau
streets and Itroadway.
The fire was one of the most spec
tacular In the history of the city, and
for a time it was feared the whole
of the financial district would be con
sumed. Every one of the 3000 fire
men in Manhattan were engaged for
the first time in one place. Suffer
ing Intensely In the bitter cold
weather that clothed them with ici
under the streams from their hose,
the firemen fought for houra In the.
narrow canyons of lower Broadwnv
as they have seldom been called upon
to fight before.
Seven Known Icad.
Among the men who perished was
Battalion Chief Walsh, whose Itfi
was crushed out on the third floor
of the Equitable building; Conrid
Slebert, a special policeman; O. Cor.,
tl and John Savzi, porters; John
Campeon, a watchman, and two un
identified men, one of them a porter.

The vaults of the Equitable Lire, the
Mencantlle Union and the Southern
Pacific Companies, the heaviest los.

tions. Out of a solid block of flue
buildings, only bare and blackened '
walls now stand, and these
cracking and fulling In many places.
The Equitable building was eight
stories high on the Broadway siJc
and twelve stories on the Nassau
side.
RECEIVER NAMED.
The Peoples Jewelry Company,
which recently opened up a store In
this city, were notified by wire that
unless they made immediate settle
ment with their creditors they woti'd
name a receiver for the above firm
and force them into bankruptcy,

their stock over to the creditors and

as the place for holding the next Na
tional convention. The opening day
of the convention was fixed as June
25. The committee adopted a reso
lution declaring for a National
Presidential primary.

WASHINGTON. Jan. 9. The I'ni
ted Slates Supreme Court today re
affirmed the constitutionality of the
Hepburn law regulating Interstate
commerce, deciding the cases of the
Union Pacific. Great Northern ard
Northern Pacific. It Is alao held that
the Commerce Commission's order
reducing lumber rates from North
west poims to Eastern points was
valid. This latter decision was on
an appeal from a temporary Injunc
tion against the Interstate Commerce
Commission granted by the Com
merce Court In the transcontinental
rnle cases.
The Government's counsel con
tended that the Commerce Court
haul clause did not authorize a uivi-
