Sunday mornltiK a party of four persons nar rowly escaped death by drowning near the Monterey hotel, about a mile and a half north of here. The party connlsted of John Savage and son. Iloyal, of Talent, Or.; Mis Huttle Iteckley and MIhh Angle Wul rad, of Newort. The surf being very high, the four, waiting their chance, started to run around a point between waves. All except Mr. Savage, who is a heavy man, made it In safety. Missing him, the other three started back to find hi m, but were cauKht midway. Yoiiiik Savage man aged to get hold of Miss Wulrad and hold her until the wave receded. Miss Iteckley, who waH farther from the rocks, having meanwhile disappeared In the breakers. Having placed Miss Wulrad In safe ty. Savage caught a glimpse of Mhss Jleckley's red hut and bravely plunged In. They were carried out at first, but the elder Savage, seeing what was happening, rushed Into the wnter and niter a desperate struggl with the strong undertow, managed to pull the half drowned girl ashore. The two young women undoubted ly owe their lives to the bravery and presence of mind of Koyul Savage.
