OlrU what v.-,uld you think If
when ou are to be married that the
minister would have you stand undbr
a run ol bell-shapeil canopy while
ii ' firming the service.
The marriage ceremony would con
sist of three words anil your hus
band would be given two sticks tied
together. Then at any time he
wanted to divorce you all that would
have to be done would be to untie
the Flicks In the presence of three
witnesses and you are a grass widow.
Such Is a Chinese marriage. You
may think It funny, but It Is no more
so than any number of other beliefs
and rituals comprising their religlun.
Take for instance a peculiar custom
at their funerals, where the corpse
Is preceded by two mourners who
scatter to the right and to the left
peculiar ielforntcd pieces of paper
bedeving that the evil spirit stopping
to pick them up would miss the place
where the dead man is buried and
allow him to rest In peace.
These and many other Chinese cus
toms and beliefs will be fully ex
plained tomorrow night at the Palace
Theater when the Chinatown aud
Bowery pictures will be the attraction.
