Government's suit against the steel
trust will figure in the Presidential
campaign of 1912 and that thero
are endless political features at
tached to It. is the general opinion
among party leaders today.
The Democrats claim the credit of
forcing the administration to act
through the House investigating
committee, which with Representa
tive Augustus O. Stanley of Kentucky
as chairman, held sittings In Chicago
and New York to investigate the
methods employed by the trust n
conducting Its business. They charge
that the Republicans, by a bold
stroke, are endeavoring to forestall
Stanley and head off the work of his
committee, which is to resume its
sessions on November 15.
"Sincerity" Pointed Out.
Those in sympathy with President
Taft's administration claim that the
suit proves the sincerity of the ad
ministration's trust breaking plan,

The Washington Post, John R. Mc
Lean publisher, which has always
been a warm supporter of President
Taft, toasts the suit today. It says
In part:
"The suit is the most spectacular
piece of trust . busting thus far at
tempted. Its effect upon the honest

probably be most Injurious. War
between the Government am! Its own
people cannot last long. Such strife
is anarchy and must cease."
Suit Too liOinr Delayed.
Senator George E. Chamberlain.
Denjocrat. of Oregon, declared:
"I believe that the suit has already
been too long delayed, and in all
human probability it would not have
been begun now if it had not been
for the persistent course of the Demo
cratic House in prying into these
combinations in restraint of trade.1
They ought not only to proceed with
this suit, but should prosecute every
man connected with it who Is respon
sible for violation of the anti-trust
law."
CHICAGO, Oct. 27. J. M. Dickin
son, former Secretary of War. who
has been selected by Attorney-General
Wickersham to handle the Govern
ment's tight against the steel trust,
denied here today the report that he
will confer with President Taft to
morrow regarding the Buit.
"It is a poor lawyer who reveals
his intentions before the actual suit
has begun," said Dickinson. "Now
that the suit is hied, of course, I ani
not advised as to what the steel cor
poration intends doing. However, tt
might be well to remember the for
ma) statements issued a month ago
by Morgan and Gary, declaring it to
be the belief of the officers of the or
ganization that the corporation is
legal, and its management proper.

The entire production of crude
platinum from placer mines In the
I nited htates for last year, as well
as for 1909, came from the states of
California and Oregon. This pro
duction in 1910, according to the
I'nited States Geological Survey, was
390 troy ounces, valued at $9507, a
decrease of 282 ounces and 93296
compared with the figures for 1909.
Nearly a third of a billion dollars
was added to the wealth of the Uni
ted States from the mineral produc
tion of the Western states during
1X10, according to the figures of the
I'nited States Geological Survey. This
includes about $66,000,000 worth of
coal, the remaining productions,
principally metals, having a value of
practically a quarter of a billion dol
lars. The total figures of Western
mineral production as compiled by
the Survey are '$313,944,881. This
is about one-fourth the total agricul
tural production of the same area,
the proportion between mineral and
agricultural production being abou'
the same as for the entire United
States. The agricultural production
of the Western states, derived from
ripures ofthe Department of Agn
culture, was approximately $1,394,
