Smith has rented his farm on South Myrtle to H. A. Fergus, and. will locate near Itoseburg. Walter Stevenson left for Placer. Or., Thursday. Ho and Ed Dohl have leased a placer mine in Jordan Gulch In that camp and are getting things in readiness for a winter's run. Mr. Stevenson has already moved his family to that point for the winter. The South Myrtle mining district will soon have a second quartz mill. The A. F. & A. M. Company will ha ready for reducing their valuable ores just as soon as the machinery now on the ground can be installed. This enterprising company, of whom Mr. Molosworth la president, are de termined to get a share of the wealth hidden In the eternal hills of the South Myrtle region. They received a complete ore grinding machine here Sunday from the United Iron Works, of Oakland. Cal., and had it hauled Immediately to their South Myrtle property. It Is now on the ground and the work of installing It has be gun. A valuable lot of ore has al i ready been placed on the dump and many tons blocked out. The ores will be gruuud, treated, and the val ues extracted right on the property. The erection ot this mill In the South Myrtle mining region will no doubt help to renew Interest In that promis ing mineral belt. There Is a vast store of mineral wealth hidden away somewhere in that region and some of these days someone la going to uncover It and reap a rich reward for their effortB. Voncnlla Times. P. He bad been 111 for ovor two years and was takon to the hospital 14 mouths ano. wliero ho had been constantly attended by hla son, Dr. Slocum, and daughtor, Miss Juliet Slocum. Mr. Slocum was a pioneer of this const, having come to San Francisco iu 1857. He was a native of New York. Later on ho came to Oregon and entered the employ of Wade, Uradbury & Co., at Itoseburg. Il was married to Miss Katherlne S. Martin at Winchester, who with the following six children, survive him: A. K. Slocum. Dr. S. C. Slocum, Mrs. 11. C. Smith, of Portland; F. M. Slo cum, of Redding, Cut., and K, W. Slocum. of this city. The eldest son and eldest daughter. A. K. Slocum and Mrs. Smith, are both dangerously 111 with little hope for the recovery of either. And the wife and son In this city are not able to attend the funeral, the son being taken 111 yes terday. The family have lived In this city for 14 years. Mr. Slocum Is survived by one brother, Kugene Mosher Slocum. who still lives in the ancestral home at Easton, N. Y, OHKCIOV NKWM. C. A.
