SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 8. Sena
tor Moses E. Clapp, of Minnesota,
and 'Governor Johnson, of California,
attacked the attitude of President
Tart In regard to the recall of the
Judiciary In speeches today before
the Direct Legislation League of
California. The league 1b leading
the campaign for the state consti
tutional amendment for the recall of
judges to be voted on October 10.
"The President says he fears
Judges will waver In their decisions
If the recall were hanging over
them." said Senator Clapp. "In all
my experience I have never known
a Judge who was Influenced In bis
decisions by the presence of an Im
pending election. There Isn't a cor
rupt bosB or lobbyist or corrupter of
public morals In the country who is
not now flgh'ing the proposed recall
of iudges.
"The abject terror that the recall
has caused certain parties to experi
ence." (ioverno. Johnson asserted,
"furnishes the humor of this cam
paign. A recent veto messag. which
received a wide notice through the
entire country, said, 'think of the

ments will be completed at a meeting
of down-state politicians with local
leaders here today for extending tbe
organization of the Lincoln Protec
tive League over the entire state.
The league is already strong In Chi
cago and promises to play an import
ant part In the coming Illinois battle
and to be an influence to be reckoned
with in both state and National po
litical affairs next year.
In the call for the meeting here to
day William Hale Thampson said:
"The league will Indorse ac andl
date for ofllce to be voted for In the
April primaries. This means a full
state ticket and a ticket In every
Congressional and Senatorial district
and in every county in Illinois.
"We believe that the candidate for
Governor should be a genuine Repub
lican and a man upon whom all old
line, practical, conservative, real
Lincoln constitutional Republicans
can unite. And in the words of a
former lllinolsan, 'for the Remiblican
host, led by this Intrepid man, there
can be no defeat.' '
