Portland journal: Tbat suspicion of a decision having been reached by the Hill system to build an east and west line across tlia state of Oregon Is really the force behind tho recent announcement of the Hnrrlinan sys tem to the effect that the Southern Pacific is to build a lino from Eu gene to Coos lluy by way of Florence, Is the opinion in some railroad cir cles. The fact that surveyors said to be In the employ of the Hill roads are Intensely active In central Idaho mapping out feasiblo routes for a cross-the-state line from a point In the vicinity of Salmon City to Holse. through tlie famous Long Valley, and the completion of a survey from Hoseburg lu Coos Hay by a companv believed to be acting for the Hill system, is taken us very significant indications that an east to west line across the state Is about to be prose cuted by the Hill system. Such a line would intersect the Oregon Trunk line and give an outlet to immense areas now untouched by railroads iu the heart of the state. It would also give Coos Hay direct connection with tho northern lines upon the closing of the narrow gap between Salmon Klver in Idaho aud some suitable point in Montana. That Hill und Harrlman surveyors are busy lu Idaho was stated in the Journal of last Sunday and since then the report has rapidly gained ground that the activity there has much to do with the Southern Pacific announcement bearing upon a Hue to Coos Bay from Eugene.
