This morning Supervisor S. ('. Bur-
truin received two or three reports
from his rangers to the effect that
the electric storm of last Monday
uight had set out a mini her of fires
in various parts of the Umpqua Na
tional rorest: some located on the
South Umpqua, some on the East
UiuiKiua and one on the North I inp-
qua Kiver. Mr. Uartrum dispatched
20 meu from Canyonvllle ana nner
to care for the South Umpqua fires
and ten men left Rosehurg at 4 o'
clock for the Kast Umpqua lire; while
another crew of men was sent from
Hoaglln to the North Umpqua fire.
Mr. Bartruin states that while
these fires are small at the present
time, the large number of them
scattered In different isolated sec
tions of the 'forest, requires quite a
force to suppress them. Mr. Bartrum
feels confident that their suppression
will be effected before any serious

than 20 murders within the past few
mouths are attributed by the police to
a gang of drowners. Oue of the mem
bers already has heen arrestee.
The custom of the murderers was
to hide In the river Jumna and to
pull below the Burface, drown and
rob bathers wearing gold and silver
arnaments popular among the llin
duB. In one day recently five boys dis
appeared while swimming in the
river and a day or two later a Mnr
warl woman with a particularly heavy
gold necklet, bracelets and anklets,
was suddenly caught by someone be
low the surface of the river and near

saved her and caught a Mohammedan

WINNIPEG, Mail.. July 27. It Is
conservatively estimated that an
army of 75.000 men will be needed
to harvest the wheat crop of western
Canada, and now that the harvest
will soon begin III earnest, the farm
ers are wondering where all the men
are coming from. In Saskatchewan
alone It Is believed that 35,000 har
vest hands will be necessary, while
Manitoba will need almost us many,
and Alberta three or four thousand,

pared with that of this year, was a
small one. The great development
of Saskatchewan by runners from the

smoke or water, except au exhibit of

firemen had extinguished the blaze
disclosed unmistakable evidence of
arson and probably rubbery. Less
than two or three minutes berore the
fire broke out Mr. Wilson passed
through the store after opening It
tor the day's business to Investigate
the circumstances or the back door
being open. Ho observed no signs
or Are at that time, hut upon starting

Interior enveloped in a mass of

When I opened the store at
o'clock this morning, tho fumes or
kerosene nearly staggered me, said
Mr. Wilson. "I observed at the same
time that the back door, locked as
usual the night before, was standing
open. Thero wasn't the slightest
sign of lire, however. I decided to
Investigate und I went out the buck
door and found the woodshed door
open. Then I stepped out Into the
yard and looked nbout for a row
moments. When I started to return
to the store, the Interior was a solid
mass or llro. I haven't the slightest
Idea how It originated."
The authorities are wholly with
out u clew to the Identity of tho per

after Wilson pussed through the
store. Wilson, himself, while ad
mitting that he has enemies, has no
proof against anyone nor is ho cog
nizant of any circumstance thut
would even Justify suspicion.
