pectors known to be dead, many per
sons missing 11 ml hundreds of others

of the forest fire raging in the Porcu
pine, district. The flumes are spread
ing rapidly. Cochrane, South Porci
plne and i'olisville are In ashes,

abandoned (bis morning, when the
flames got beyond control.

Scores are dead today in the timber
conflagration that has already de
stroyed1 the towns of Oscadn and Au
Sable. How many perished are un
known and possibly never will be
known, as the .lames swept every
thing clean. Muny persons were
driven by the flumes into Luke Huron.
The fire started last night near Os
cada In the stabyards.
Reports from Alpena and Uoyne
City say fierce fires are burning near
there. Several logging camps near
the latter place .are surrounded and
it is feared many persons may have
perished.
Right hundred refugees had arrived
by noon. All were homeless and
many were badly burned. The food
supply here is exhuusted. Provisions,
doctors and nurses nre being sent
from Bay City.. Stanley Edgely, of
Flint, who arrived here today, de
clared -that at least fifty persons
at Au Sable lost their lives.
Forty cars and two bridges on the
Michigan Central Itailroad near Gray
ling were burned this -afternoon.

necessary order calling out the
troops.

Douglas County lost two Civil War
veteraiiH Tuesday, January 11, by the
deaths of Montgomery Sherwood, at
the Soldiers' Home, West Roseburg,
aiid George W. Prior at his home at
Oakland. Mr. Sherwood dropped
dead of heart failure on the platform
of the hospital stairway and his body
pitched forward over the railing to
the ground. He wns 7 1 years of
age. Mr. Prior's demise was due to
bowel trouble. His age was about 75
years.
Mr. Sherwood served hi Company
C, lst Illinois Infantry. He was
admitted to the Home from Rose
burg in May. 1908. A sister, Elmlra
Sherwood, Jives at Eureka Springs,
Ark. The funeral will be held at the
Home tomorrow.
Mr. Prior leaves a wife, two sons,
William and Frank Prior, of Oak
land, aud a daughter, Mrs. Ellen
Green, ot Portland. He was a mem
ber of the Methodist Church and had
lived in Oakland for the past 2i
years.
