Letters of In quiry were received from 39 states.! Canada, England, Mexico, the Philip--nine Island and Costa Rica. The! greatest number of inquiries from1 one state were received from Wash ington, with Oregon, California, Col orado, Oklahoma and South Dakota following. The number of inquiries from Illinois and other Central Mis sissippi Valley states were much less than the p:ist year's average. From 20U consecutive letters of 'in quiry the preferences of the writer are shown as follows: Ninety-two made general Inquiry, 22 were Inter ested In general farming. 40 In fruit, 2 In timber lauds, 20 iu homesteid lands, 10 in stock and dairying, 5 In truck, 7 In poultry and 2 in ho'h. Twenty-five people made inquiry rela tive to business openings In Rose burg, 3 asked for maps. 18 aBked for the names of real estate men, 22 ! for employment and 15 for copies of our local papers. ( Among the businesses and prof fis sions represented are found lawyers,, painters, machinists, foundrympn, t carpenters, photographers, druggists.' architects, school teachers, real e.-j tate men, civil engineers, pharnia-l cists, tailors, engineers, doctors, bak ers, cigar makers, printers, dimly, makers, undertakers and electriciHim. A number of people asked if they i could purchase school laud at a low' price. There were also a number f Inquiries relative to the Oregon A:. California Railroad lands. Inquiries' were made relative to hotnestt-ad lands In Coos and Curry Counties, i.s we!! as Douglas County, and vario s inquiries were made relative to Coos County and the construction of the proposed Coos Hay, Holse & Eastern Railroad, lately known as the Coos Bay & Oregon Central Railroad. A number have asked when this rail-, road will be built; others ask when the railroad will be built from Drain to Coos Hay. and a few business men have written In asking about the op portunities for business locations fn the new town sites along this rail- road. ' 1 A friend wriies in and wishes to secure a homestead with some im provements on It. An artist from New York and a lady school teacher from Wisconsin also wish homesteads somewhere in the county. A number of Inquiries osk about logged off land, and also places to rent. There are sin-oral Inquiries relative to transportation between Roseburg and Coos Hay.. A number asked about the auto road to the coast, and one asked if it is true that a railroad will be built front Grants Pjiss to Crescent City. One wrrter wished to locate some where where she could raise (lowers, and one of our men correspondents stated that the primary requisite for him is a loactiou where fishing is good. One writer in Minnesota states ' that a party of .'10 Minnesota m'.'n expect to visit this part of the coun try this fall with a view to Investing and locating. A man from Florida ' wants to know how hot it gets here in the summer, and there are a num ber of Inquiries as to the supply of j mosquitoes fn Douglas County. There are numerous trades offered. Two people make inquiry as to the proba bility of earthquakes in the Umpqua Valley. In view of the fact that the rumors relative to the building of the rail road from Coos Bay are Increasing in frequency, It may be of some sig nificance to note that the inquiries relative to this railroad increased ma terially in the last two months, and jcome from various portions of the 'country, so it seems that there is an 'impression pretty generally through lout the West that this railroad Is to be commenced before spring. While the Commercial Club would be very glad to give definite announcement : relative to the building pf this rali jroad. nevertheless the inquirers were ; told in every case that there was uo j certainty of Its construction, as no ! definite public announcement had ! been made of the fact. The Portland Commercial Club re educed its advertising matter duritig :the spring months on account of the 1 general fanning communities being too busy to write letters while plant ling crops; therefore the number of ', Inquiries has been less than usual. I The publicity department is pre I paring a new book covering the re ) sources and attractions of the Ump qua Valley, which it hopes to have i ready for distribution before the j fall colonist rates are In effect. This I book will not be sent out promis cuously, as was the case with the previous book, but will be sent only to people who write making a di rect request for It, as the club, by a series of little folders, has suc ceeded In interesting people general ly In Roseburg and the Umpqua Val ley without resorting to the expen sive methods of Bending out these books generally.
