The local band gave a half hour concret In front of the big tent and a good sized audience assembled to enjoy the evening's program. The ladles' quartette, Mrs. Ciurdon A. Fory, Miss Allle Black, Mrs. John Townseud and Miss Arrle Black, sang I "The Kerry Dunce" so pleaslngl) that the audience encored them, to , which a happy response v. us given. Rev. J. K. Burkhart offered pruyer. I "Orpheus uud His Lute," a solo by Prof. Fory, also merited an encore to which he appropriately responded. Rev. W. H. Katon, the Chautuuqi.a chairman, then introduced Mrs. W. A. Siuick, president of the '95 Mentu Culture Club, who, in a brief address. Introduced Mrs. Sarah A, Evans, if Portland, president of the state fed eration of women's clubs. Mrs. Kvans first spoke of the work of women's clubs lu general. This movement dates 'back for many hundreds of years, its origin being a united effort of mothers for the betterment of tho'r homes and better conditions and bet tor education of their children for the duties and enjoyment of life. The numerous phases of the present day work of women's clubs were referred to. They are not taking part in political uffalrs nor are they organ ized as suffragists. Yet they have been recognized by the general gov ernment in various ways, such us materially aiding In bettering con ditions in the Panuma Canal zoiim and In the pure food movement throughout the country. Public health work, educution, especially among the poor whites of the south where a high percentage of illiteracy has prevailed, public health, conser vation in various lines, domestic science and household economics, no child labor In the factories, the fight against tuberculosis and other com municable diseases, as well as the up lifting features of art and society were referred to. Mrs. Evans is a member of tbe board of pure food in spectors of the city of Portland and told of some of the thingB already accomplished there toward securing purer food and especially purer milk. Her address was of a high education al value and was well received. A duet by Prof, and Mrs. Gurdon A. Fory was well received. The second speaker of the evening wus Rev. Edith Hill Hooker, formerly of Kansas but now of California. She Is a National lecturer of the W. C. T. U. and is an uble and eloquent speaker. Her theme was: "The Story of Two Horolnes." So interesting was the topic, however, that she told the story of only one of them, that of "the wise woman" of ancient Is rael, leaving the other until this morning's session. This briefly told scrclpturnl story of the "wise wom an" of 3000 years ago, whose name the ancient historian fnlled to record, was the successful appeal of a woman of thnt period for her home, her fam ily and her people who were be sieged In their own walled city by tne armies el King David unrti;r ills haughty general, Joab. This story was charmingly and eloquently told. and Intermingled' with it was the ef forts of the mothers of the world, from that day to the present for the bclierment of thiir homes and the!) people, and especially for the protec tion of their sons and daughters from the pitfalls and allurements that too often betray them. After announcements of today's programs an informal reception was neid by tne local ladies clubs who were In charge of this session of the Chautauqua. Several more musical selections were rendered und a very enjoyablo occasion it proved. A splendid concert was given by the Chicago Ladles' Orchestra this afternoon.
