opened this ufternonn. The sessions
nre being held in a large canvas tent
on the Catholic Church property,
corner Washington and Kane streets.
The program opened at 2 o'clock
this afternoon with a vocal duet by
Misses Arric and Allie Black, fol
lowed by u reading by Woodson Mnd
dox. All three entertainers are
among the very best local talent in
their line, and they did extra well
on this occasion. llcwty encores
evidenced the appreciation of the big
crowd present. .
Equally as well received was tie;
lecture on "Men and Measures." de
livered by Dr. I.. (I. Herbert. Ills
genial manner and Taclle delivery ap
pealed at once to the listeners. The
subject was handled in a scbolarly
manner. It was optimistic In tone
laud liberally spiced with telling il
lustrations. The Chautauqua man
agement Is congratulating Itseir upon
the happy selection of Dr. Herbert
for the opening number, lie lectures
again tomorrow afternoon, when his
subject will be "Cash, Conscience and
Country."
At 4 o'clock this afternoon, the
Women's Christian Temperance
Fnlon held a workers' conference, at
which several prominent club mem
bers spoke. This evening's program
will begin at 7 : ail o'clock sharp. It
will open with a concert by the Rose
hurg Commercial Club Hand, under
the leadership of Prof. W. II. Ilow
di n. Following wiil be a program of
addresses and vocal music. Then
there will take place a reception by
ladleB' clubs and the W. C. T. U.
The Chautauqua has opened most
auspiciously even better than Its
promoters had hardly dared to hope
Tor. Being the first event of Its kind
ever held in the city. It is chiefly an
experiment, but a most gratifying
one. Everything, points to a com
plete success. Insuring the holding
of Chautuuqiias annually in Roseburg
for years to come.
Tomorrow's program is one that
will appeal to all lovers of good, clean
entertainment, with invaluable edu
cational phases. It follows:

Circuit Court adjourned this morn
ing until tomorrow morning, when
Charles HarrlBon, a local negro, will
be arraigned on an indictment charg
ing him with grossly immoral con
duct involving his wife. Meanwhile.
Harrison is in Jail in default of $1,
000 bonds, rules a special Tenlre
Is summoned to try him or IT he does
not plead guilty. Harrison will be
compelled to remain In Jail until
next November, when court will re
convene in regular session. The two
secrut indictments tiled by the grand
Jury Tuesday have not been made
public.

of the alleged dynamiter, is being
hounded and that she has the right
to refuse to testify before the grand
Jury, counsel for the MeNumaras to
day sent her before the jury with In
structions not to dismiss nny phase
of the ease. Deputy District Atlorne
Witch announced that he had already
prepared contempt charges against
her and that if she persisted in her
refusal to testify that she would be
locked up. The woman says she wll!
pot testify. Attorney Clarence Dar
row strongly denounced the prosecu
tion for what he termed "third de
gree" methods to secure information,
from her.

day from the District Attorney's ofllco
to show cause why Mrs. McMutiig.il

court. Darrow said he was ready to
