a favorahle report on the Underwood

to the House Tuesday. That this
measure Is a political proposition and
not intended to be enacted was the
statement today of Congressman HIP.

today sent a telegram to the Sen
ate committee on elections requesting

Taft and Teddy to Meet.
WASHINGTON, June 3 The first
public meeting between Taft nnd
Roosevelt since Tart's inauguration
will happen at the Cardinal Gibbons
celebration in Baltimore Tuesday. It
is reported that there will be a pri
vate conference afterward and that
the coming presidential nominations
will be discussed, it is reported that
Roosevelt has assured Taft he will
support him for renomination. Post
master General Hitchcock will also
be present, it is said.

library and well known about town
by reason of his unfortunate affliction
of St. Vitus dance, staggered in front
of R. 11. Mathews' automobile thit.

run over. Kye witnesses of the acci
dent attach no blame to Mr. Mathews,
who was driving the machine at the
time and going ut a slow rate ot
speed. Mr. Harness Hi not believed
to be seriously hurt.
The accident occurred at the cor
ner of Rose and l.ane streets, in front
of the homo of Mr. Benson, the gro
cer. Coming up l.ane street, Mr.
Mathews was Hearing the corner
when .Mr. Harness was crossing the
same street toward it. Harness came
to n dead stop in the street as if to
let the automubile go by, but when
the machine was nearly opposite him
his lack of physical control caused
him to stagger forward directly In
front of It.
One of the fenders of the automo
bile knocked Mr. Harness to the pave
ment and both wheels on one side of
the machine passed over his body.
With the assistance of a bystander,
Mr. Mathews placed the Injured man
in the automobile and took him to
Mercy Hospital. There - Dr. A. K. j
Sethor made an examination of Mr.
Harness and found no broken hones.
The patient complaiiiH of pains in his
back, indicating internal injury, but
whether this is-serious or not cannot
yet be determined.
This is the first accident of Its kind
to ever happen in Roseburg.

strongly as he can the reasons which
prompted him to negotiate the reci
procity treaty with Canadn, and to
answer the statement that western
farmers will be injured if the trade
agreement is permitted to go into pr
fect. He will also dwell upon the fu
tility of burdening the reciprocity
bill Willi amendments.

sive a way for the Democratic Sena

tist Association, meeting with the
Hrst Baptist church of Roseburg,
was commenced Friday morning.
Yluderntor E. O. G. Groat, of Cottage
Grove, called the Association to order.
and prayer was offered by Rev. T. K.
Tyson. After the appointment of
Sessional Committees, the letters
from the various churches were read
by the clerk, Rev. W. H. Eaton, cs-
slsted by Rev. Jesse Hyde.
These were a pleasant surprise to
:ill, many of the older attendants
commenting on the splendid progress
reported and the note of cheerful op
timism given in the vurious reports.
A summary of the statistics will
given later.
The report of the cominl'tec on
Sunday school work was read by S. S.
lohns. of Myrtle Creek. The report
was an excellent one, nnd nfter mo
tion for its adoption, an address was
delivered by Rav. W. "- H. Eaton.
speaking of the report and bringing
i message of good cheer as -he re
lewed the progress of the Sunday
school work of the past year. The
address brought out much helpful dis
cussion.
New pastors entering the Asoc'n
ion since last year were called for
ward and introduced to the Asocta-
tlon nnd given the hand of fellowship
bv the Moderator, the Association ris

That Bind." The new pastors intro
duced nre Rev. II. Davis, of Eugene,
Rev. C. C. Van Gorkon, of Cottage
'irovo. and Rev. Jesse Hyde, of
Springfield. .

quet was held in the Sunday school
rooms of the church. About 40 dele
gates and visitors, together with a

formerly overruled by Federal Judge
