Charged with attempting, by means of a threatening letter, to extort money from Anthony Gal lagher, an aged Dixunviile farmer. Waller J. Scott, a middle aged man and son of Charles F. Scott, a well known contractor of Edenhower, was arrested In Koseburg last Saturday evening, after a clever piece or decoy work on parr of Deputy Sheriff Sam V. Stunner. The preliminary ex amination of Scott began at 2 o'clock this afternoon before Justice of the Peace K. V. .Marsters. with Attorney O. 1 Coshow acting as counsel for the accused man. Scott is alleged to he t lie author of nil unsigned letter received by Gallagher on the 23rd of lust Feb ruary, demanding that Gallagher leave $2f,0 in gold coin at a desig nated spot and threatening him and his wife with death if they told any one about the matter or attempted detection. The letter contains t he words "us" and "we," strengthening the belief of the a-thorities that Scott hud an accomplice in the plot. They suspect in this regard a strang er seen In Scott's company the past few weeks. This individual, the sheriff's ollice learns, was run out or Spokane, Wash., by the police last winter. There is no evidence, how ever, connectir'5 him with the ex tortion case. Scott was employed by Gallagher last January, cutting wood. ' From his poor opinion of Scott's character and from the knowledge of Gallagher's premises displayed In the 'letter. -Mr. Gallagher was satisfied at ithe very beginning that his rornwr ! work hand was the guilty parly. '.Strongest of all circumstances lend . Ing to this belief, however, was the I address on the envelope containing ithe threatening communication. In stead of the word Anthony appearing '.as Mr. Gallagher's first name there j was the substitute or "Tony," and : Scott, according to Gallagher, Is the 'onlv persor in the neighborhood who lever addressed him in that way 11 i conversation or otherwise. 1 Gallagher notified the sheriffs ofllce Immediately after reading the letter and on the night of the same day Deputy Sheriff Stunner and 1 n Marshal Joseph Huffman secreted themselves near the place where the depositing of the money bad been : demanded. After waiting until near ly midnight a heavy rain set in and the two otllcers returned to town without having i-een anyone appear for the expected coin. Then It was up to the officers to bring about the arrest of the susiiected man in some other wav. and this was accomplished bv Stunner on the knowledge Hint Scott was an experienced sawmill : worker and would probably answer a letter offering him employment in that line, the purpose being to get a specimen or Scott's handw riting. Scott fell Into the trap, sending back a reply in handwriting that convinced Stanner of bis guilt. His letter "G" in the word George is exactly like tttat capital in the word Gallagher, and the capital "T" und the next three letters in the word Tonyson are equally as exact in their similarity to the word Tony appeariug 011 the envelope addressed to Gallagher. In all oilier respects the handwriting of the two letters is unmistakably alike. I The strongest comparison or all 'was brougnt out when n letter was dictated to Scott at the sheriff s office, in which the word Oregon was used. Repeating the error In his letter to Stanner, Scott spelled the word thus: "Oreogou." Tills is the w-ay the name of the state is spelled 'on the Gallagher letter. The officers are positive that they have the right man in Scott. To aid in the prose cution of the case, they have seal to Portland for a handwriting expert, who is expected to reach Koseburg this evening. Scott's arrest took place In the lobby of a local hotel, while he was waiting to meet a man named Smith. representative of the supposed Geo. Tonyson. The Mr. Smith In this rase was Ralph Qi.llle. son ol the sheriff. The purpose was to first get un admission from Scott that he was the party who answered the Tony son 'letter. When young IJulne put the question to Scott he got a prompt replv in the affirmative.
