HAVHVRST NOTES.
Last week tbe Infant child of Mr.
E. H. Myers accidentally pulled a
cup of hot tea over Itself, scalding it
pretty badly. We learn, however,
that It is now getting well.
Mrs. Mary Jones, who Is now visit
ing at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Lee Allen, Is Improving from
her recent Illness.
Mrs. W. A. Roberts and son.
James Miller, returned last Mondny
from a visit to Hoseburg.
We learn that the school board
has decided to give the spring term
of school to Miss Eua Uevore, of
Drain.
Miss Clara Moore was a recent
visitor to Roseburg.
George Cannon has received a
new engine for his woodmill.
Along about Christmas oue of our
staunch Republican friends declared
that turkeys went down to 18 cents
because of Democratic - victories
everywhere. He got a little too pre
vious that time, as It wasn't a month
until they were up to 24 cents, and
are Belling at that figure today.
Seems to us that when there Is not
enough of anything to go around, it
Is always a good price, politics or
no politics.
Some people are making a terrible
howl that reciprocity with Canada
will be the ruin of us, but we believe
It will result in the greatest good to
the greatest number. People who
raise wheat that sells for a dollar a
bushel can't see what It means to
the majority who eat bread but do
not raise wheat.
It seems a little odd that some of
the very people who are so anxious
to exploit the wonderful resources of
Oregon will get mad and refuse to
admit that Oregon has the best gov
ernment to be found anywhere. If
It waB apples, or any other fruit,
vegetables, climate, or any of the
natural resources In question, they
would say any one who denied that
Oregon had the best would be a dyed
In the wool "knocker," and a fit
subject for a warmer climate, but
for fear some political opponent will
get a little credit for having ndvo
cated some of the measures that are
making Oregon famous for Its pro
gressive laws, they prefer to
"knock." For out part, we like to
know that Oregon is spoken of In
the East as a state where the people
rule.
Cyrus H. Walker, chaplain of the
Oregon State Grange and Grand Or
ganizer, was the guest of J. T. Miller
ast week. These two pioneers had a
very enjoyable time recounting the
xperlences of pioneer days. Mr.
Miller was born In 1836 and Mr.
Walker In 1838. Both are hale and
hearty, and are examples that prove
that a farmer's life is the best.
