Troops have been sent, but the soldiers are un able to keen the people, driven to ilesneration by hunger. In hand, and large numbers of executions are tak ing place. "We met hundreds of refugees. The situation during the winter will be terrible, far worse than the great famine of three years ago. A constitutional amendment for the election of United States Sou tors by direct vote of the people is fav ored by 35 Senators, who have ex pressed their convictions. Of these, 22 are Republicans, and 13 Demo crats They are Messrs. BaMey, Borah, Bourne, Brlstow. Beveridge, Brown, Burkett, Chamberlain, Clapp, Crawford, Curtis, Dick, Dixon, Oore, James, Nelson, Newlands, Per kins, Percy, Purcell, Rayner, Smith of Michigan, Shively, Simmons, Smith of South Carolina. Stcne. Stephenson. Taylor, Warner, Owen, Guggenheim, McCumber, La Follelte, Nixon and Tillman. Opposition to such an amendment has been declared by 12 Senators nine Republicans and three Demo crats. They are Messrs. Brandegee, Elklnn. Frye, Fletcher, Heyburn. Johnston, Kean, Lodge, Dillingham and Money. Non-commltal opinions' have been expressed by 1 0 Senators 1 1 Repub licans and live Democrats. They are Messrs. PUTS MAN ON DANCING PARTIES. SALEM, Or., Dec. 22. According to-the dictum of Dr. Fletcher Homan, president of Willamette University, given yesterday morning at chapel, after learning of the proposed "Medic" dance, if any of the liberal nrts students are found In attendance there will be a case of expulsion in short order. Dr. Honinn spoke quite forcibly when he learned that such an event was to be pulled off, especially about the report, that Willamette was to Inaugurate a new era and allow dancing parties In the future, in de- llunce of the old and ' established principles of the University. Here tofore, and In the future, tbe Uni versity authorities have frowned on any class or organization upon the enmpus giving any such parties. Of course, Dr. Homan could not prevent any of the medical or law students that desired to go to the dance from going, hut he made it 'mite clear to the students of the liberal arts that If they attended they did so at their own peril, and took certain chances of being ex pelled from the university sutntnur-lly.
