One of tha publications received by the Commercial Club, the Kansas Farmer, contains In tbe December 10th iBiue, among many other useful things, two which may be of special interest to the ranchers of Douglas oouiny. ' One of these ' In entitled, Protect Trees Against Rabbits, and Is as follows: - It Is now the time of year wben .rabbits play havoc with young trees. Mix tbe other Ingredients In a barrel or bucket of water, then add the lima with water enough to make a thick whitewash. Paint tha trees with this and it will stay on much -better than common whitewash. It may be neces sary to make 'two applications during the winter,, but even, then it la the quickest and best method I know tor protecting young trees. The other subject Is "The Pocket Gopher," and. gives the following In regard to exterminating them: Pois oning is the best method of combat ing the pocket gopher that we have thUB far discovered. Trapping Is ef fective, but slower than poisoning. Fumigation does not give good re sults, and therefore we do not rec ommend ft. The poisoned baits that give th; best results are soaked corn or finely chopped sweet potatoes treated with a syrup prepared by the experiment station. Raisins, prunes and pieces of apple, potato and sweet potato Into which crystals of strych nine have been inserted also make ex cellent baits, but require much more time in preparation than the corn or sweet potato baits.
