LONDON. Nov. $4. Kthel Lenove, sweetheart of Dr. Ilnwley H. Crippen, bunged yesterday for wife murder, did not sail yesterday for America, as reported. She said today she would not leave for America for several months. As executrix of the estate of Crippen. she must remain in Eng land until it if settled. She will dis pose of all the property and pay all debts. This will probably require months. "Friends in America Invitee me to go there, but I'm afraid 1 won't find peace in the United States." she told an interviewer yesterday. Miss Leneve displayed a telegram which she sent to Cri,ppen an hour before the hanging. It reads: "My loving thoughts and prayers are with yo.i. God bless you, darling. Wifey." She says she believes Crippen was inno cent. The execution of Crippen completed the criminal records of one of the most sensational of recent murder , cases. Crippen. slight in figure, was just past 50 years old. He was born in Michigan, and niter studying medi cine practiced in the United States and Canada. In 1 !f)6 he married Cora Mackamotskl, of itrooklyn, a vaudeville actress, whose stage name was Belle Elmore. They removed to London, where Crippen engaged in dental manufacture. Soon there was domestic Infelicity, due. Crippen alleged, to the attr-n-tlons hla wlio received from men. Then Clara Leneve. a prepossessing woman, 27 years old, entered Crip pen's employ as a typist. She svm pnthlzed with the doctor and the iwo fell In love. Meantime Crippen and his wife were estranged. Nearly a year ago, Miss Leneve, feeling her position keenly, became Impatient with the situation. About the same time the doctor was in need of money. Mrs. Crippen disappeared suddenly iast February. Her husband inserted a death notice in the papers, saying she had suc cumbed to an illness while visiting In California. Woman's lloily Found. Actress friends of Mrs. Crippen persuaded Scotland Yard to make an Investigation and the police officials Interviewed Crippen on July 12. He threw the police off the scent but on the following day tied from London In company with Miss Leneve. who was disguised as a boy. Subsequently their presence o board the steamer Montrose was known to Scotland Yard through wireless messages, and as the Mon trose was approaching Quebec Crip pen and Miss Leneve were arrested. 1 his was on July :tl. EL PASO, Texas, Nov. 23. Belief that the Government Is rapidly gain ing control of the situation hi North ern Mexico is fairly well established here tonight. So far as can be learned the Insurrectionists are not in actual control of a single Import ant town. Messages of assurance have been received from Parral, Tor reon, Gomes Pnlaclo and Chihuahua. Quiet Is reported in each of those cities, with the government forces :in:l property owners in full control. Francisco Portlllo, Mayor of Jua rez, has been assured by hU govern ment that all of the Important towns in the state of Chihuahua are held by government forces except Guerrero,' to which place soldiers are being sent. The troops have recovered control of the Madero branch of the Mexico Northwestern Railroad, which was at tacked and captured by Insurrection ists Monday night. Nine rurales. three Mexican women and a child were killed' In the attack which was directed against soldiers. Scores of telegrams have been re ceived here today from American residents in Mexico, all asserting that the danger was passing. Many of the messages come from Parral, Torreon and Chihuahua. Several 'inrrtreds Hive arrived here from in terior points. All asserted that they were in no actual danger, but some say they are prepared tor the future. 'The insurrectionists are scattered and entirely without concert or or ganization." was the assertion by Governor Diego Redo. State of Slna loa, upon his arrival here on his way home from Mexico City this morn ing. Nov. 23 There is consternation In the heart of Hor ace Vose and all of Rhode Island tur key growers over the report that the bird which maintains the reputa tion of this state on the President's Thanksgiving table has not arrived. "The turkey, as line a bird as I ever se.;t to Washington," says Mr. Vose. "was shipped from here on Mondny and should have arrived at the White House bv this time. The Court of Appeals toddy affirmed the judgment of the Superior Court whereby Abraham Reuf. former po litical boss, was convicted of bribery and sentenced to servo 14 years' Im prisonment. Ruef's attorney will be allowed 40 days in which to prepare an nppeal to the Supreme Court. Abraham Ruef was credited with being In control of the political situa tion in San FranclBco during the In cumbency of Mayor Schmitzj Ruef built up the union labor political machine, which resulted In the elec tion of Schmltz for three successive terms, from the last of which ht was removed from office as a result of the bribery-Kraft Investigation financed by Rudolph Spreckels and conducted by FranclB J. Heney ns special prosecutor. This Investiga tion, which began soon after the big fire of 1906, revealed sensational de tails of political corruption in the municipal government and resulted in the grand Jury returning more than 100 Indictments, over 70 of which were against Ruef. It was In Ruef's trial that Francis J. Heney was shot down in the court room by Morris Haas, an ex-convict, whom Heney had exposed when he was drawn as a Juror to try Kuei, and who committed suicide In the countv Jail a day or two later. Ruef was convicted at tne seconn trial of having attempted to bribe John .1. Furey. a member ot ine Schmitz Board of Supervisors, to vote for an overhead trolley franchise for the United Railroads, the president of which. Patrick Calhoun, also is under Indictment. The complete unofficial vote on Initiative and ref erendum measures throughout the stsate Indicate that nine of them passed, some of them being hailed as radical in the extreme, the most radical of these being the proposed tax amendment to the constitution which allows counties to make pro visions 'for tnxntlon and exemptions within their own boundary lines and which virtually requires every tax measure to come up by a vote of the people. Just how this amend ment will operate is not certain, as neither the tax commissioners nor the attorney general were ready to give a decisive opinion on its pro visions yesterday, but it seems prob able there can be no tax legislation passed by the next legislature nor at any time until nt a general elec tion the people have passed a general law putting the provisions of this act into effect.
