The feat which made him first
prize winner was the contest In the
care of poultry carried on for a year
part by the Y. M. C. A. and the Ore
gon Agricultural College. The con
testants were the hoys and girls of
Portland. Young Hogan received a
prize of $100 In cash and 10 others

Hayes' flock of hens yielded a net
profit of $2.72 each.
Oregon is bringing from the mid
dle western states a carload of eggs
per day for supply of the home de
mand. The Importation extends over
a period of nhout seven mouths In
the year, though It Is not always as
heavy as now. Kuril carload costs
more than $11000 and the supplies
now nrriving and to come for the
rest of the Importing season are nior
nge eggs. The Imports are from
states where lund Is higher, popula
tion far more dense, and there are
commission charges, handling
charges, dealers' profits and a heavy i
freight charge over 1800 nillfts of
railroad. The only reason why we

states Is because we neither know
how nor try to produce them at
home.

PORTLAND. Nov. 16. The Ore
gon Highway Association was infor
mally launched last night. Declar
ing their belief that the State Legis
lature will readily appropriate
amounts covering the entire expense
of a trunk highway crossing the stute
front north to south, members of the
Oregon Good Roads Association last
night approved plans for a meeting
of committees from all organizations
that favor the improvement of roads
that a plan of campaign in behalf of
the state highway may be denned.

the Oregon Highway is much desired
by automohlllsts, and that this class
is of such members and wealth that
they deserve consideration together
with farmers who would be bene
fitted by building the highway.
E. Henry Wemme stated that the
Legislature will not fail to pass a
measure appropriating money for the
state highway at its next session if
called upon to do so. The old style
Legislature controlled by special in
terests had been ousted, said Mr.
Wemme. and .the Incoming Legisla
ture will care for the people's Inter
ests. "It was a crooked deal and a
crooked gnme with a trick table and
marked cards," said Mr. Wemme.
"Now It is nil straight."
A meeting of representatives from
the state automobile association is
soon to be cnlled. Representatives
of the good roads associations will
meet with them to give further con
sideration to the state highway plan.
