The increase will he in the item for
roads. Several districts have so far

for road improvement, and in order
to make every district share in the
expense of such work and at the same
time have it equally distributed, it is
proposed to increase the genera!
levy somewhat, for road purposes.
Mirny Petitions Denied.
Aside from the petitions of the big
corporations, there were turned down
by the Equalization Hoard a number
of othei'B from smaller concerns and
individuals, asking for reductions In
assessments. Assessor Calkins' two
colleagues on t he board. County

Fire drills were practiced nt thi
Roseburg high school and the Lane
school, also, today. At the latter
the building was emptied in less than
1 Vs minutes and at the high school
in exactly two minutes. An impro
vised smoke at the high school made
the scene more realistic. The drills
were witnessed by the school hoard,
the city a,nd county health officer.
Dr. llouck. and a few spectators. The
pupils, of course, had no knowledge
that any drill was to be had, but if
there had really been a fire In either
!nstaitce every child would have- es
caped in safety, it was afterwards
suggested that the drill would have
been more complete had the children
been req u i red t o carry with them
Their books, hats, wraps, etc., which
was not done at this time. That
feature will doubtless 'be added at
subsequent drills.
