Joseph Clarke Quant was born
near Rochester, N. Y., Oct. 10. 1851,
of German descent. At the ai;e of 4
years the family moved to Illinois,
thence to Michigan, residing near the
now flourishing city of Clarksville,
which was named by himself and a I
friend named Clarke Howard. On
May 27, 1884, he was married to Miss
rjlhi Cook. To this union were horn
three children, Seymour C. and
Blanche L. being born in Michigan,
and Ora, the youngest child, was born
near Oakland, Oregon. In the spring
of 1897 he moved to near Koseburg,
living on the North tlmpqua river
near the old Trask mill. The fol
lowing fall he moved to English set
tlement, eight miles east of Oakland,
in which vicinity he lived till the fall
of 1904, when he leTt the farm and
moved to Oakland. Since that time
he has been engaged In the meat
market business, first under the Arm
name of McCulloch & Quant, and
later as Quant & Son.
The day of his tragic death he and
his only son, S. C. Quant, had been
at work as usual, and at about 2:20
p. m. they purted near the shop, the

2:30 train for Eugene, while Mr.
Quant went to the market. After a
short conversation with the meat cut
ter, J. H. Neus. he said he would go
to the rear and clean his gun. This
was the last seen of him until about
