This Is a measure which la of course only of dliect Interest to the people residing in tbe districts affected, but under the provisions of the law. It Is to be voted iiiou by the people of tbe entire stale. Judging from matter tbat Is being seut out by the commercial clubs of Luue and IHugtaa counties the great inajoi ity of the residents of those sec tions are opposed to the bill and the only ones there are who are favoring it are those who are endeavoring to cicala u real estate boom lu what Is to be the new county seat. C, under date of October 11 publishes tbe following account of the tragic- death of P. O. Hlrscblng, a former resident of Roseburg: Tbe circumstances attending the death of Fred O. Hlrsching, whose body was brought across from Porcb er Island yesterday, are painful. Cor oner McMullin conducted an inquiry Into the cause of Hlrscblng's death from a gunshot wound, and Neil Mc Arthy told bow he bad seen Hlrsch Ing's boat just beached at the shore across tbe water from hlB place. He had heard a shot and saw Hlrsching struggle a little way up across the beach from the boat. Hlrsching had called for help after tbe shot, other wise McArthy would not have thought that anything was wrong. McArthy and another man hurried over to help Hlrsching, but be was dead wben they got there, tioth barrels of a shotgun found by the boat bad been dis charged and tbe dead man's hand was blown away, while part of tbe charge bad entered bis armpit and torn through the lungs. As the evidence showed tbe case to have been clearly one of accidental shooting, Mr. McMullin held that no Inquest would be necessary. Deceased bad a partner named Fred Elclk. Hlrsching, who was engaged In farming on Porcber Island, was a na tive of Cleveland, 0 and a member of tbe Eagles of Roseburg, Ore. He was 36 years old. The local lodge of Eagles took charge of the remains and shipped them to Cleveland, O., where Hlrschlng's mother and sister reside. WEST NOT ALLIED WITH 1IOURNE POLITICALLY PENDLETON, Ore., Oct. 20. "I hope Senator Bourne is supporting me. I want every vote I can get. All I know about Mr. Bourne's attitude Is what I read In the newspapers," Bald Oswald West In a speech here last night. "I have seen Senator Bourne but once In over two years, and that was when I went I met with tbe Ore gon delegation In Secretary Ballln ger's office in Washington about tbe first of this year with reference to the Slletz matter. Senator Bourne never asked me for a favor In bis life and I have never asked one of him. I have received no word from him by letter or otherwise, directly or Indi rectly about my caindidacy in this campaign. " Not one of bis friends or sup porters has come to me with offers of support or for exaction of promises in tbe event of my election. Expect Square Deal.
