ROSEBURG Review iVKN Reynolds, Negro, to Pay Heavy Penalty For Crime TWO MORE INDICTMENTS Stephen Owen?, Again Ch.ugc4 Will Bootlegging Cal Judy Wins Homestead Fight Seven years' imprisonment in the penitentiary was the sentence pro nounced hy Judge Coke ill the circuit court this morning upon S. M. Rey nolds, colored, former Pullman car porter, convicted of n statutory of fense. Reynolds had nothing to say before the Imposing of the penalty. When Judge Coke ilnished, 'however, the negro stood motionless for a few seconds, as it dazed, then he walked steadily out of the court room down to Ihe jail. Addressing the court In the nrgro's behalf while the prisoner stood up to receive the penalty. Attorney V. V. Caldwell said: "1 don't wish to ap pear as condoning the defendant's conduct, but 1 do maintain that he Is not guilty of the charge speclii-d in the indictment. There Is not one syllable of evidence to sup'iorr the verdict. The jury, 1 believe, acted honestly, but It was absolutely ttn i'Ofsible for it to eliminate race ciej- udice. Cal Judy, the paroled life- termer from the state penitentiary, was vic torious In court yesterday tfternoon in the leal battle instittied by his former wife, Mrs. S. C. Solnnder. for the possession of the old family home stead of 160 acres on the ground of undisputed possession for the statu tory period of ten years. Judy's at torney. Senator Albert Abraham, ar gued that the woman had no color of title; that the patent which she ob tained from the government nrter her husband was sent to the peni tentiary, was in her husband's name, not hers, and that the homestead, therefore, was held for ills benefit alone. This contention was the ba sis of a motion made by Abraham that the court Instruct tho jury to render a verdict for Judy. This Judge Coke did and tho jury com plied without retiring. Mrs. Solan der's attorney, John T. Long, will appeal the case to the supreme court. Damage Case Xou-Kiiltcd." The remaining two are Chick Wright and Ralph Cassey, automobile thieves, under sentence of five years each. Two New Indictments. The grand jury this morning in dlrted Stephen Owens of Scottsbnrg and Joseph Wllhelm of Drain on sep arate charges.
