A strik ing parallel was drawn between the growth and prosperity of the dry city of Macon, Georgia, and the wet city of Jacksonville, Florida, two cities of about the same size. Jacksonville had saloons and claimed to receive all the liquor trade from that section of Georgia In which Macon is locnted. Macon went Into the tim year of prohibition facing the financial panic and while the banks were giving out clearing-house certificates because they did not have the money. The city had nothing to meet the panic with but prohibition, and she was J47.0u In debt, never having been out of debt during her history. The liquor papers of Georgia and of Jack sonville charged that the prohibition ists were Impoverishing Macon to Anrich .TnpkHonvllle. Hut at the end of the year the official figures pub-! Ilshed In the dully newspapers tne first week In January, 1909. showed that Macon had paid her 147,000 of debt and had $600 cash In her treas ury, and this was done with cotton 15 per cent cheaper than for a long time and while lumber and turpen tine had gone down so low that numbers of men went out of business, and besides the fruit crop was killed by frost. The liquor men. of course, mid Umt prohibition killed the fruit ;rop. Jacksonville, with all her rum revenue and with her tropical fruit .rnde, and although she was not de pendent on the cotton and lumber and turpentine as Macon was, re oorted thnt she had $2000 less In her treasury than she had to begin the vear with. Then Macon reported that ihe cleared $800,000 more through her clearing house than she did the year before with her mm revenue. nd Jacksonville reported that she loured $1,800,000 less." At this point Mrs. Armor called attention to the fact that figures don't lie, but llnrs may figure, and that Inasmuch as both speakers on both sides would quote figures which would be contradictory, voters would have to be guided by other consider ations in reaching a conclusion. At this point she made a vigorous ref erence to nils-statements made by ex Mayor Hose and warned the. voters that, like a jury In court, If they found the testimony of a witness false In one particular, they should distrust hlin In all particulars. She also read a telegraphic answer of Mr. Smith and both telegrams are reproduced In full a tUe beginning of this article. The effect of the read ing of these telegrams was electrical and sensational to the last degree. The audience seemed to conclude as one person thnt ex-Mayor Rose had undertaken to deceive the people of Roseburg. Admitting that the liquor traffic pays the brewer, the distiller, the saloon keeper and his assistants, the speaker asked if anybody outside of those engaged In this business was ever made any richer because of the llquo.' traffic. "Did anybody ever wear better clothing or have a dollar more In the bank because of the linuor traffic?" she asked. Throughout the address Mrs. Ar mor was frequently interrupted by round after round of applause, and It Is no exaggeration to say that tho crowd thnt filed out of the Armory was the most enthusiastic crowd of people ever seen to leave that edifice.
