R Walker, accused of building-loan Ifruiid, speaking bitterly from hla coll at the clly lull, ycstcrduv afternoon. "I have stood between this company land Its victims, even putting up my I own money to help some of them out. I am Innocent of any wrong doing In the matter. " Walker was arrested Saturday , night upon a charge of larceny by I bailee, following several months' ac tivity as the local representative of the Jackson Loan & Trust Company a Mississippi concern. The plan of operation of tho company waa to make loans to homobullders, first re quiring them to deposit 12 per cent of the amount they desired to bor row. It Is alleged that many per sons have been prevailed upon to give up money In this manner, with .no return. Connected Story Told. ttulker, though pitifully shaken uy his imprisonment, told a connec ted story of his dealings with the company. "Later on. the Standard Home Company, a rival organization, wrote to tho secretary of state that our company was violating the law. The matter was rorerred to the Attorney General, who gave an opinion that the company was doing a building nnd loan business and must deposit securities, as required by the law governing sucn institutions. I was very much Interested In this matter and made Inquiries at the home office In JnckBon, Miss., and was assured that the law would be compiled with I even made a trip back to Jackson to satisfy myself that the company was all right, and was assured by the .secretary that the Oregon re quirements would be complied with. Walker Deceived, Me Says. "I wus deceived all along. At last I realized that the business was shaky and I wired to the secretary that I would hold onto the dues and would not tuke the responsibility of turning them over to him. I also untitled a majority of the contract holders that I held their ' payments subject to their order. As tor this man Ilnvls, who caused my arrest, I do not remember tho state of his account, but I can say that his money Is rendy for him. "The extent of the company's operations has been greatly exag gerated," said Walker. "There are not more than eight or ten contract holders In this city and not 100 In the state no not fiO."
