night, following a sudden attack of
heart disease. Barrow, who was 60
years of age, was city editor of tho
Laramie Boomerang when that sheet

Nyo left the Boomerang, Barrow
succeeded him as editor. Burrow be
gan to attract attention 15 years
ago, when he commenced the publi
cation or "SagebruBh Philosophy," a

IX MEMORIAM.
Perlt Huntington Burt was born at
Toncallk, Nov. 27, 1854. and de
railed from tbls life at bla home In
Monmouth, Or., Sept. 24, 1910. He
was the eldest sou of Qeorge A., and
Ellen Hurt and spent much of his
life near the bome of his birth, but
for 12 years be had been telegraph
operator at Monmouth, having spent
25 years at that occupation. He
was married Sept. 28, 1880, to Miss
Belle McKee, who with six children,
two brothers and two sisters, are
left to mourn as those stricken by a
groat blow. The children are: Ed
ward A., .John M.. and Luclle, of
Portland: Mrs. Mlgnon Carmlchael
of Salem: Dewey and Lorena, of
Monmouth. Brothers and sisters are:
Henry Hurt, of Yoncalla; Roaco Burt,
of Portland; Mrs. Lucy Samler and
Miss Sue Burt, of Yoncalla.
Death 1b always sudden and there
are few homes that has not been In
vaded bv the silent Reaper, but when
he takes from the activities of life
an affectionate husband and father,
a true friend and wise counselor, we
are not prepared to submit to the
Inevitable and as a friend remarked,
"the state cannot afford to lose men
like Perry Burt." To those who feel
the grent weight of sorrow, our
heart's best sympathy is extended for
we feel that this Is a mutual loss
and know It is felt by many people,
for his occupation has taken him
Into severul places and he could count
as friends ull who know him. He
was a fearless advocate of all good
hubits of life and by hla voice, vote
and life made It easier for those
about him to live right. After an
acquaintance of thirty -years, we are
glad to puy this tribute to hiH mem

A TRIBUTE.
The sad news of the death of Perlt
II. Burt, of Monmouth, Or., caused
sincere sorrow in the hearts of his
many old friends and schoolmates In
Douglas county. He was the eldest
son of the late George A., and Ellen
Applegate Hurt. Born In Yoncalla,
he grew from childhood to manhood
In the town where his pioneer par
ents built their home. In his early
youth the dark cloud of sorrow cast
Its shadow over his home and left
the family of four brothers and three
sisters bereft of a mother s loving
care, but a home or like tender and
motherly Influences was given them
by their grandparents, Charles and
Mallnda Applegate. How short
seems the time, since we who are
left to pay a brief tribute to his
memory, were associated with him In
the school room where he was an
ern8t and diligent student, always
faithful to duty and ever ready to
extend a helping hand to his fellow-
students; he won and held the high
rogard of his teachers, schoolmates
nnd large circle of friends. He laid
the foundation of his education In
his native town of Yoncalla, and
finished school In the then highest
school of learning in this section, the
old Wilbur Academy. He early de
veloped traits of self-reliance and
energy, and a mind free from preju
dice, of broad and liberal views. He
respected the sincere convictions of
his fellowmen, with a charity free
from denomlnatlonallsm. To the last
lie displayed an Industrious and en
ergetic interest in his lite work, and
like his Illustrious uncle, Jestte Ap
plegate once said of himself, "he
preferred to die lu the harness."
Notwithstanding the protestation of
those who loved him best and reared
for hia health, he continued faithful
ly at his post as telegraph operator
to the last day of his life.
While the friends of his childhood
feel saddened that we have parted
with a friend, our sympathy goes out
to the bereaved wife, the children
bereft of a father's loving care, and
the brothers and sisters for whom
the sun will seem to shine less
brightly through the veil of sorrow.

WATSONVILLE, Oct. 10. With a
monster religious service on the
pluza. In which all the churches of
the city united, the Apple Annual for
1910 started Sunday for a week's
run.
There never was a display of ap-
ules like this anywhere. Compared
with the collected exhibits of Cali
fornia, the National Apple Show at
Spokane is said to appear as a county
fair would to the Panama-Pacific
Exposition at San FranciBco In 1915
With all the advantages of two states
from which to Becure fruit, the ex
hibit at the Suokane show totalled
thirteen cars In tne aggregate, while
this display has twenty-eight carload
exhibits in addition to the smaller
displays ranging from live to luo
boxes, making ten cars additional.
The navilion erected by the city
proved entirely Inadequate to house
the fruit, so the association rented
two large circus tents, eacn iuu Dy
200 feet, and these have been com'
oletelv rilled.
The exhibits are beautiful, every
nerson interested having gone to ex
treme trouble and painB to make as
fine a showing as possible. The fruit
selected has been carefully chosen
with respect to uniformity of size,
beautv of color and symmetry or ap-
pearance and packed by experts who
considered time of no account, In
structions being In each Instance to

Aimer, the whirlwind orator from
Georgia, Invaded Mount Holly this

little woman, who seems to be able to

had her audience completely in sym
pathy with her arguments and ready

A. Morrison, D. D.. rector of Trinity
Church. Portland, 0.., created tne
sensation of the day at the gathering
of the house of deputies here today
by declaring "The Bible is not tne
word of God and should be taken by
no man to mean that."
His assertion came during a spirit
ed debate on the topic of inserting
tbe name of Ood In the constitution
of the church. Rev. J. W. Mcllvane,
of Pittsburg, pleaded with the depu
ties to insert this at some place In
the constitution, saying that his pre
amble to that effect had been written
by. tbe late Dr. W. R. Huntington, of
New York City, and that he thought
the Insertion should be made.
Replying to his speech, the Rev.
Mr. Morrison said:
"I do not consider, and I know
that hundreds of other ministers do
not consider, the Bible to be the
word of God. It would be unfortu
nate to bring up such a subject for
discussion at this time, so 1 merely
mention It In urging against the
adoption of such a statement.
"The scriptures are so full of In
accuracies that the adoption of the
proposed preamble would place us
in such a position in the scholastic
world that It would be impossible to
Induce men of education to enter
the ministry and subscribe to our
doctrines.
"Such an assertion in the pre
amble would be out of accord with
this age of scholarship."
The preamble was defeated, 87 to
29.
