HAYH KITTY YEA IW OK INTELLIGENT RKKOIIKSTATION Will Give the I'niled Htates Mure Timber Than When Colum bus First Landed. After a tribute to Colorado and Its citizens, ex-Governor Adams said: "After one hundred years Riven to rutting their own forests, corralling their water powers and despoiling their coal treasures, our Eastern brothers are especially vigorous In demanding that the National Govern ment stop the waste and vandullsm of the WeBt. It Is a Burvlval' of the old Yankee spirit which a generation ago originated Indian societies for the protection and reformation and salva tion of the Indians of the West. Read ing Itomola and their Bible, they prayed 'poor Lo' might be saved from the rapacity and cruelty of the front iersman. "So far the battle has wnged around I he standards of Plnchot and Ilallinger. Both are no doubt hon est, and each means best, but preju dice and partisanship huve clouded the Issues between them their con troversy has taken on the color of a personal and political ruction. When we think of these two statesmen, 'Tafty' or 'Itoosovelty,' rather than 'conservation' springs to our mind. So confused has public knowledge become that I question whether hair the people of the country have any clear conception of the difference be tween 'Plnehotlsm' and Hullluger lsm.' "Oroattas may be the need of. con servation, there is no call for hysteria or despair. Neither this generation nor many generations to come will be cold for want of coal or wood for fuel, the springs will not run dry nor the rivers cease to How man will never go wllho.ut shelter for want or timber to build. Forests will never disappear, 60 years of scientific re forestatlon will give the United States mor available tluibtf than Hood whiD Columbut first lAdtd on tb.li continent. "When we cut a tree to warm out Dearth or to build a borne, we are not robbing posterity. There ! no excuse (or watte, but to weep over probable woes of a thousand years hence puts us In line with Mark Twain's grief at tbe tomb of bis an cestor, Adam. , "We have been reckless with the coal and oil and gas, but the dark ages are not coming, they are in the past. We have prodigal forests, but our children will have shade and beauty and timber. The beat UBe we cun muke of coul and Iron is to build merchant ships, to build new lines of railroads, make plows and ull the tools of Intelligent Industry. "Make It easy, and not difficult, for families to get a footing upon the public land. The Government should be more interested In locating citi zens upon the soil, than in collecting rent from the public domain. Within Colorado there are 26,000,000 acres upon which to preHB a foot, range a calf or cut a whip stock would muke a citizen a trespasser. This is the new Plnchot dispensation. It 1b no doubt legal; perhups necessary, If the Government is to derive the maxi mum revenue from Its tax-exempt eBlate, but It does seem more or less restrictive, If not oppressive, to old pioneers who huve In freedom ridden those reserves and who In rlBk, hard ship and danger, brought in civiliza tion und gave value to the wilderness. "Why do they seal up millions or acres? Open lands In the United States; fade the trails to Canada. The corporations will gobblo It, cry those who would keep the domain fenced and dead and useless. Today there 1b no need fo four the corporations; they or their agents are too busy trying to keep out of the pen to plun new In vasions upon the property of the peo ple The people are stronger than any corporation, trust or combination." THIEVES OVK.lll.OOe. $2150,0110. HOUSTON, Texas, Sept. 28. It hat been thoroughly demon strated that the only scientific way to sweep it with a vacuum clean.- Where the old brooms are used tbe dust, dirt and germs are merely pounded into the air and aa soon aa tbe sweeper has gone by they settle back on the furniture, fixtures, walls, ceiling and on the floor. The vacuum cleaner sucks up ull the dirt and dust and deposits every particle of It' in an air-tight basin where It can be curried outside and destroyed. Granted that tho streets of a city are dirty and detestable as well menacing and dangerous Is there anything more ridiculous titan watch Ing the futile nttempts of the "White Wings" to keep the pavements clean Men witn brooms scrub and sweep norse-drawn rotary brooms do the! best but the dirt is 'never half col lected and Is tracked back into the highway nearly as fast as It can be swept Into the gutter. Muny cities with abundant water supplies hav adopted the custom ot flushing the main streets every night. , Thin washed the streets are reasonably clean, but there are ever and .ever so many cities which cannot afford this extravugnnt use of wuter. ' It Is time the present methodB ot street sweeping were replaced by something bettor. The streets of all American cities ure notoriously un- cieun unnougn millions of dollar are spent to keep them clean. The time hus urrlved when progres sive cities should cleuu the streets by air pressure und air suction. The vacuum cleuners used now In hotels apartment houses, public buildings and in muny private homes, should be adapted to the work of street clean ing. The cost would be Blight, the streets could be piped, the air ex initiated ut certain points, and men quietly moving up and down the -streets could pick up with Iheir air- exhausting machines every particle or (lust, paper and dirt. While waiting for the streets to be provided with air suction pipes ills trlbuted economically throughout on cities, the thing could be done tem porarily, a large vehicle with nn electric air pump moving along the streots, followed by men passing the air exhaust over the street surface and drawing the dust und dirt into a large dust-proof box on the Wagon would diminish the death rute, do away with a public nuisance, und re move fur rrom the city endless bil lions of diseuse germs every day. The dust collected could be burned or hyglenically disposed of for fer tilizing purposes. Fortunately, the dlsuppeurunce of tne horse rrom our streets is a mat ter of only a few yeurs. The dump ing of dirt on the streets by business nouses will be stopped. The pave ments and the street cleaning will be done by the vacuum process, and this will be rollowed by regular sprinkling with disinfectants salt wuter where this Is possible. It Is perfectly sufe to suy that bo fore the end of this century every big ;ity, lis streets, public parks, alleys .inn crevices, will be kept us clean is the modern door yard. Ex.
