Washington has gone Insurgent with a whoop. Miles Poindexter, Insur gent candidate for the senatorial nomination, has defeated Thomas Burke, regular Republican, by a plu rality of not less than 30,000 and by a majority over ' all opponents. Burke's own county. King, went for Poindexter by 5000. Pierce county, the home of J. M. Ashton, another senatorial candidate, also gave a ma jority for Poindexter. The President obtained the withdrawal of ex-Sehator Wilson, of Seattle, but James M. Ashton, of Tacoma, and Thomas Burke, of Seat tle, Insisted on remaining in the race and dividing the regular vote. The balloting yesterday shows a concen tration of the regulars would not have changed the result. Cannon Sure of Victory. DANVILLE, 111., Sept. 14. With the Congressional primaries but a day distant, Uncle Joe Cannon seems reassured of re-nomlnatlon from thiB district. His opponent for the Re publican nomination is Reverend Henry Downs, who is making a cam paign on an anti-saloon platform. Because It is almost certain Cannon will win, little Interest Is being tnken in the election. Missouri Kndnrses Both. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Sept. 14. Joint endorsement of Roosevelt and Tart is the feature of the Repub lican platform or Missouri. The docu ment was Anally drawn up alter a night's session and was presented to the convention today. It recom mends the conservation policies or Tart and Roosevelt and endorses the party administration and Governor Hndley, who lead the fight against the Tatt endorsement. Over 200 miners were In the shafts when the explo- lon occurred, it was at first be lieved that all of them were en- oinbed with no hope of rescuing them. The miners, however, were In the lower tunnels working, so they were not reached by the gnBes. When the news of the explosion spread, the families of the men rushed to the open tunnel, and the pitiful scenes of the Cherry mine- disaster were re- enacted before the real extent of the disaster was known. III Luck Pursues Zeppelin. BERLIN, Sept. 14. The destruc tion today of Count Zeppelin's air ship, Zeppelin VI, was caused hy a terrific explosion or gas while the craft was making a return trip to the barn. The ship did not plunge earth ward, but settled lightly, only three ot her crew being seriously hurt. No passengers were alioard. This Is the fourth serious accident to Zeppelins dirigibles.
