Theodore Rwiwvelt has declared JjiniMcir a firm believer in the prin ciple of Statement I the principle wh!fh the aHserntjIy leaders In O re ft on are weklnK to overthrow. Kollowiiiff In a portion of an Akko riated IThh dlnpatch Bent from Mil waukee, Wis., last Wednesday and published the same day In the Kven liiK Telegram: "It has been stated to me since rny arrival here," said Col. Iloosevelt today, ''hat In spite of Senator La Toilette's hiving carried the prl fnurlfB In fair and open contest, an effort will be made to heat him In the legislature. I do not for one moment helleve this, been ii He any sii'-h con duct would be, from every point of view, an outran that would be a deliberate violation of good faith. ' 'When In Oregon the Democratic candidate for fienator, Governor Chamberlain, carried the primaries find It was proposed that the Repub lican legislature should turn him down, I strongly and publicly took the position flint such an act would be one of bud f;ilth by the legislature toward the people, and I take the s.'iriie position In regard to Senator I.a Toilette.' " OKKOOX IS TIIK IIKST. The Dailes. Or., Sept. 9, 1910. Kdltor Rfvlew:---After a pleasant two weeks" visit in Salt Lake City, we are glad to get back to Oregon cnt el or. Wttll admitting that ! Salt Laic cur. Ofdta, and otnr plaxt along ih rout may claim oma ad ran tag ovr our horn town, va still dtclara In faror of our own beautiful green forest and flr-crowned hllia. We alio believe that time and well-directed energy will put Oregon to the front In every line of commer cial development. The only drawback to our succeui la thai we are not utilizing our vait resource as la be ing done elsewhere. Yesterday a free carriage from the Business Men s Association of The fialles, took us to the vineyard and fruit farm of Mr. J. A. Heck. Mr Fleck and hit wife are Germans, and their 4 00-acre farm Is conclusive evi dence of their Industry and energy. We found Mr. Fleck and his good wife and children all busily engaged In packing grapes and peaches. lie aides his own large family, Mr. Heck employs 8 large number of assistants. We saw crates containing the most luscious grapes, purple, pink, and white, the grapes as large as a quall'B egg, and peaches, three of which would All a 4& -gallon "Economy" fruit Jar. As we were driven around the vineyard, and saw literally piles of grapes on the vines. It looked like there would surely be a large amount wasted. Hut we were Informed that unless a prolonged rain comes, all will be safely disposed of. Mr. Fleck carne to The Oalles 20 years ago. At that time his 400 acres was mostly rocks and pine trees. From the looks of the land adjacent, we should say that there Is no land In Douglas county that presents as sterile and discouraging l prospect. Mr. Fleck said It had sometimes taken two men two days to grub out one large tree and roots. Vet this 40D acres sold a few days igo for $60,000. Last year his grapes netted $8.i0 per acre, and he sold over $700 worth of plums and peaches, be ttidfs all kinds of vegetables. He owns a smaller tract of land that he Intends to plant to trees and grape vines as soon as he vacates his present location. He simply says, "Vateh me grow." The moral we draw from this Is Be Wise and see STRONG'S HEATERS Douglas county needs more energetic development. ECHO. OKKGOX XKWH. Not Sisters Now and again you ice two women pans Int down (ho treet who look like inters. You are eitonithed to learn thut they ire mother and daughter, and you realize tlmt woman at forty or forty-five ought to be at her finest and fnirett. Why isn't it so? The general health of woman is to in timately associated with the local hculih of the essentially feminine organs time there can be no red cheeks and rounJ form where there is femalo weakness. There will be 12 cottage of one de sign, 12 of another, six of another and five smaller houses for smaller families. It is evident that the men who worked so hard and saved the mill for the company are to be given the best the company has to offer. They are noted for doing the square thing by their employes. J. A. Higglns has commenced suit In the Circuit Court In Kugene against John M. Hamilton and Fred Ware to recover the sum of $2Cy paid them for four mules sold him out of the bunch of horses reported to have been stolen by them In East ern Oregon and which were given up to the owner, W. H. Isaacs, after he had proved his property. Mr. Mig Iiib has levied an attachment on de fendants' saddles, bridles and camp outfit, garniuheed the bank In which they had deposited notes taken for horses sold and their cash and It Is nrobable that they will come out whole. Others who got Btung by buying the stock are not making any move to recover their loss. Only the well-to-do will be able to use butter on their bread this fall and winter If the -present conditions prevail. It Is now higher than It was at any time last winter and will not drop a cent.
