Last year the price of early apples

be a shortage of early apples from
Ohio and Iowa which suffered from
the April freeze, but there will be

in the West. Maine, Massachusetts,

felt no concern as to the safety of my
family. My wife, who was troubled
with Insomnia, slept alone, and our lit.

the door closed, climbed Into my room

a crib In oue corner, 1 took off uir

noiselessly. L'ndressiug with the same
caution, I got Into bed and was soon
asleep.
I was awnkened by a low growl.
Thinking that my big dog llruiu bad

got up and put lilm out when I was
startled by another growl unlike that
of a dog, hut strangely reseiiiblliig

which the country abounds, lint what
lent a thrill of horror through me was
that it came from Koslc s crib.
Tho chamber door opened near niv

a possible exit for me If Indeed I guve

an attempt to suve my own life. I
might Blip out of bed and through the
door. It is said that self preservation
Is tho first law of nature, and I con
fess. I practically illustrated the say
ing. Catching sight of two glaring
eyes In the corner in which the crib
stood, I lost consciousness of all but
otic tlilng-my own Immediate threat
ened death. Springing from the bed.
I pulled open the door, which fortu
nately stood slightly ajur, slipped
through and pulled it shut behind me.
At tile same instaut I heard the sound
of a heavy body striking against It
and a terrible growl, which I now rec
ognized as that of the man enter (the
Igor) or India.
'J,'hcro was nothing to do but hold
tho door. True, the tiger would not
unlatch It, but I did uot care to take
even tho most remote chance of letting
him Into that portion of the bouse oc
cupied by my wife and the servants.
There was a trausom above, and very
soon glass shattered by the tiger's pnw
roll on my head. Looking up, I saw
Ills uose protruding, but fortunately
he space was too small to pass him.
Itenllzlug the fact, he abaudoned this
point of egress, and I heard the thud
of his fore paws ou the floor. I ex
pected lie would go out at the window,
but he did not seem Inclined to do so.
lenrlug a step behind me, I turned.
and there stood my wife In her night-
clot lies.
"Ftosle!" I moaned.
'What of berr
"Lost."
Without a word the mother sank In
a swoon.
Now comes a surprise In my story.
for which, whenever I think of It, I

'Thank God!" ltosle herself came ruu-
nlng along the hallway. A few hasty
questions and answers explained her
presence. She had heard low growls
from the tiger under the window bo
fore ho entered and. terrified, fled to
her mother's room and got into bed
beside her without awakeuiug her.
Then cninc servants, but so great is
he terror of the man eater ninong the
natives that when I explained that I
had left one in my room most of them
fled. .My wife revived, saw herdatigh
ter and swooned again, this time
through excess of Joy.
One feeling now took possession of
me, n desire to have the blood of the
creature that had so terrified me. that
might have killed my child. Directing
the servants to take my wife and
daughter to their sleeping room and
lock them In. I called for my repeating

when I saw a bit of yellow fur above
the window Rill. It was the ridgo of
his back. I should have waited till ha

Jumping through the window, but I
could uot brook the delay. 1 called to
the servants to bring me something on
which to stand so that I could see Into
the room, but noue of them dared ap
proach. Finally oue braver than the
rest threw me a lox. Taking It to
within a few yards of the window. I

I What has since puzzled me are my
own clinuges and feelings, tlrst horror
at the supposed fate of my child, next
the all pervading sense of my ownilau-
jut and lastly fear giving place to a
desire for revenge. The most pleasura
ble sensation I have ever experienced
was the sight of the beast springing
up and falling dead.. I dislike to think

8HId the Dramatist's Account
With Hi. Win. M.rchant.
It Is related of Itlchard Brinsley
Sheridan, the dramatist and statesman,
that, always in debt, be had among
his creditors the brothers Challe, who
were the partners lu a nine llrui lu
1775.
One day when he was giving a din

Sheridan sent for one of the brothers,
told him he wns now able to settle his
account and Invited hlin to the dlnuer
party, nsklng him to come before the
hour for some private conversation.
Chalie arrived enrly, and ho was no

off n servant with a note to the clerk,
desiring him. as .Mr. Challe was fa

as soon as possible three dozen of

The unsuspecting clerk sent the
wine, with which the guests were so
pleased that they asked where it came
from. Sheridan, turning toward Chalie,
said, "1 am iudebted to my friend here
for all the wine you have tasted and
am always proud to recommend hi m."
It was uot until the following morn
