People will not eat oranges that have been frozen, and consequently turn to apples. Last year the price of early apples and pears was high. The trade seem ed to forget the enormous peach crop In western New York. Reports show that there Is just as good a peach crop there as last year. There may be a shortage of early apples from Ohio and Iowa which suffered from the April freeze, but there will be plenty of apples both In the oast and in the West. Maine, Massachusetts, Now Hampshire and New York all have plenty of winter apples as well as all other kinds of fruit. I pulled open the door, which fortu nately stood slightly ajur, slipped through and pulled it shut behind me. At tile same instaut I heard the sound of a heavy body striking against It and a terrible growl, which I now rec ognized as that of the man enter (the Igor) or India. True, the tiger would not unlatch It, but I did uot care to take even tho most remote chance of letting him Into that portion of the bouse oc cupied by my wife and the servants. A few hasty questions and answers explained her presence. She had heard low growls from the tiger under the window bo fore ho entered and. terrified, fled to her mother's room and got into bed beside her without awakeuiug her. Then cninc servants, but so great is he terror of the man eater ninong the natives that when I explained that I had left one in my room most of them fled. .My wife revived, saw herdatigh ter and swooned again, this time through excess of Joy. One feeling now took possession of me, n desire to have the blood of the creature that had so terrified me. that might have killed my child. Directing the servants to take my wife and daughter to their sleeping room and lock them In. I called for my repeating rllle and, going into the yard, took po sition near the window through which I lie tiger had entered. There was do sign of him. and I feared he had gone when I saw a bit of yellow fur above the window Rill. It was the ridgo of his back. I should have waited till ha put his paws on the sill preparatory to Jumping through the window, but I could uot brook the delay. 1 called to the servants to bring me something on which to stand so that I could see Into the room, but noue of them dared ap proach. Finally oue braver than the rest threw me a lox. Taking It to within a few yards of the window. It Is related of Itlchard Brinsley Sheridan, the dramatist and statesman, that, always in debt, be had among his creditors the brothers Challe, who were the partners lu a nine llrui lu 1775. One day when he was giving a din ner party to some distinguished people Sheridan sent for one of the brothers, told him he wns now able to settle his account and Invited hlin to the dlnuer party, nsklng him to come before the hour for some private conversation. Chalie arrived enrly, and ho was no sooner lu the house than Sheridan sent off n servant with a note to the clerk, desiring him. as .Mr. Challe was fa voring him with his company, to send as soon as possible three dozen of burgundy. Iwo dozen of claret and two dozen of port, with a dozen of old hock. The unsuspecting clerk sent the wine, with which the guests were so pleased that they asked where it came from. Sheridan, turning toward Chalie, said, "1 am iudebted to my friend here for all the wine you have tasted and am always proud to recommend hi m."
