MENOKMIALL, Miss., July 2. Having killed six negroes in a nice riot that began last night, a mob of white men resumed its attack on the negro quarter today. The negroes lied in all directions, and the mob is now hunting them. The trouble started Sunday, when Luther Buckley, a white man, went to the cabin of a negro named Brad ley to collect an account of $2. The pair quarreled, and Bradley killed Buckley. The negro then iled, ac companied by other negroes who were In his cabin at the time of the killing. They took refuge In the cabin of a negro named Skiffer, who sought to protect them from the mob of white men which had formed In the meantime. Storming the cabin, the mob dragged Skiffer out-, side and riddled him with bullets. Pour other negroes were beaten severely. The fire of race hatred was com municated to other localities, and many negroes fled into the swamps. Two members of a mob of white men who pursued them were shot and killed from ambush. In a letter to the Oneida County Repub lican Club, which started the boom, Mr. Roosevelt said: "May I thank the club for Its mes sage? Its good will Is appreciated, but I ask the club, to immediately stop the ngitatlon to have me nomi nated, because it is absolutely Im possible for me to accept.' Strike in Abeyance, WASHINGTON, July 2. The threatened strike of conductors and trainmen on the southeastern rail roads Is being held in abeyance, pending a linal effort to affect a set tlement. There Is little prospect, however, of this being brought about. The lines affected by the threat ened strike are the Atlantic Coast Hue, Seaboard Air line, Southern railway, Queen and Crescent, Mobile and Ohio, Georgia Southern and the Florida and Georgia Central. Traffic would he blocked In Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Flori da and portions of Kentucky, Ten nessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. The increases demanded range from 15 to 30 per cent. Southern railroad officials discredit the dan ger of a strike. "The employes have no desire to force an issue, but they stand on matters of principle," said F. L. Pitt man, representing the unions. "The matters discussed involve the unlim ited use of money by company offi cials who travel In private cars. The vic tories were before the Register of the United States Land Office at Rosehurg, and of course the contests will be carried up to the Interior Department. However, the Marsh fleld men are enthused over their first victory. In all. there are seven teen local people having claims there that the Northern Pacific has filed script on, but only nine of the con tests were heard lust month, the others being scheduled for hearing later. George Farrin stated today thnt Additon F. Cook, Watt Short, Jus. Wynne, Hugh Sneddon, John Her ron, John Schaefers and R. C. Cordes, Jr., bad won their contests and that Earl Winner had lost. COQUILLE, Or., June 30 The nd Journed session of the Coos County Republican Assembly met here today with a smaller attendance than It had at a former meeting, only forty-live being present at today's session. Thirty-seven delegates were se lected to attend the State Assembly in Portland, and they go pledged to secure the nomination and endorse ment of Fred Gettings, of MnrshHeld, for the State Wafer Commission. W. J. Butler, of Marshrfield, was nominated for coroner. The Assembly did not take up the district judgship in any manner, it is understood that Judge Coke re quested his friends not to have any action taken as he evidently preferred to adhere to the state primary law and go direct to the people for his nomiuJ'.Uon. The ofll clal announcement here today, com ing from tho Department of Justice at Washington, thnt United States District Attorney C. H. Lingenfelter had been removed from office, fol lowing charges of incompetency, In judicious conduct, and even graver charges, which the Department re fuses at the present to make public, broke like a bomb shell among his friends and in Federal circles. Assistant United States District Attorney S. L. Tipton will succeed Lingenfelter. The charges filed against the re moved district attorney allege that he was Indiscreet in his handling of the so-cnlled Grent Western Beet Sugar Company land conspiracy cases, in which Messrs. Garrett, Colthrop, Daniels, Howie and Grif fith were Indicted by the Federal grand jury on the charge of de frauding the Government, The grand jury Insisted that an Im mediate trial bo secured and that it take place in June. Lingenfelter, ignoring instructions. iB said to have entered into a stipulation with conn' sel for the defendants by which the case was laid over until tho Septem ber term of court. It Is further charged that he criti cised Special Assistant Attorney-Gen eral Peyton Gordon, commissioned to prosecute tlie Kettenbach-Kestor-Dwyer tiinberfraud cases at Lewis- ton, and declared the defendants were Innocent. He also openly de nounced the special assistant for In dicting William F. Kettenbnch, Geo H. Kester and Frank Kettenbnch former officials of the Lewlston Nil- tional Bank, on charges of embezzle ment, inferring that he had indicted the wrong men. Attorney Is Dlsnuulillrd. Lingenfelter had been disquullllcd to prosecute either the Northern tiinberfraud cases or the bank em bezzlement cases and the Department of Justice took from his jurisdiction the prosecution of the Barber Lum ber Company cases, both civil and criminal. While the Department has not made public Ibe moro serious charge, II is openly hinted in Feder al circles that It accuses the deposed district attorney of engaging in prac tice on land cases, which Is strictly prohibited by the Government; that Mr. Lingenfelter was given a hearing before the Department that he was called (o Washington a woek ago Immediately following this hearing Ills Suspension Follows. Abe Ruef, once political boss of San Francisco, before his conviction on a bribery charge, must appear before Superior Judge Lawlor tomorrow and show cause why he should not be remanded to the custody of the sheriff. Ruef has been at liberty on (300,000 bond Blnce December 2, 1909. He was released from the county jail at that time on the plea that he was in poor health and that he needed time to confer with his attorneys in preparing a bill of ex ceptions. This bill has been Hied in the ap pelate court. Now Judge Lawlor Is determined to find out the condition of Ruef's health. Ruef was released from Jail by order of Judge Cabaniss while Judge Lawior was absent rrom the city. Ruef Is under sentence of 14 vears in San Quentin penitentiary. This mornings alarm of fire was occasioned by a small blaze In the woodshed in the rear of the Hnmtlton Drug Company's brick. P. brnkoinnn. formerly of this city, now of Port land, passed through here this morn ing, with his wife nnd child, en route to Lob Angeles, where Mrs. Larson's parents reside. Constable Fred Wright leaves this evening for Medford armed with a warrant for the arrest-'of C. E. Young, a field representative of Salem newspaper, who 1b detained there In the custody of the local au thorities. Young Is charged with obtaining (50 under false prtonses, and the complaint against him was lodged in the Justice Court here by J. D. Zurcher, the local abstractor. A Bight draft on the H. 8. Crocker printing company In San Francisco is tho means by which Young ob tained the $50, Zurcher endorsing the draft, which was then readily cashed by one of the local banks. Young at the time was a traveling agent for the Crocker Company, and u was ne wno secured the order for tho printing of the autl-Nesmlth campaign stamps being used on let ters being sent out from this city. ine urocker company failed to honor the draft and In reply to an inquiry from Zurcher told him that "nt the time" the draft was issued Young "had" $40 coming to him, leaving the inference that he sub sequently drew out that sum.
