sweeping victory for the reformers,
headed by Judge Ben H. Lindsey,
author of the "Beast and the Jun
gle,' an expose of- rotten conditions
of Colorado polltcs, is indicated to
day in t he returns from yesterday's
iiiunit'1 pal election. The Republican
machine, which hat been in control
of thfwcity. has bein completely
routed by the Democratic ticket. The
victory Is characterized as a vote of"
confidence for l-iudsey, who. though
a Republican, campaigned for the
Democratic reform ticket.
By a majority of lii.OOo. the city
remains "wet," but with certain
limitations on the liquor trallle.
Saloon licenses will he increased from
$000 to $1000 per year and their
number will be limited to one for
every 700 inhabitants. This hint
provision will reduce the number of
licenses to about 2M). less than a
fourth of the present total.
An amendment to the city charter
which has carried provides for the
establishment of a municipal court.

From Its very start, several years
ago, the Sells-Kioto show has had
magnificent horses. At first it did
not have so many, but the quality
was of the finest. Today a parade of
the horses alone, much more num
erous now, would have made a show
worth going miles to see. When the
long procession of them, with lions
and other animals in cages, ele
phants, camels and ponies in their
places and a fine looking body of
menagerie and ring people directing
ft, swung down the business streets
from the circus grounds in North
Roseburg, the wholo town was out
to see it. The management is ex
tremely generous in what It shows
the public gratis. And the parade
had an appreciative public to view it.
There Is a big crowd at this after
noon's presentation of the entire
show. It Is as good a show as ever.
If not a better, and everyone wond
ers why the management thought It
necessary In these piping times of
prosperity to cut the price of admis
sion In two, trust or no trust. The
ring work throughout, without
specializing, Is uniformly excellent,
A good many novelties hnvebeen In
troduced, for it still Is possible to add
something new to a good circus, al
though you may have doubted it be
fore you saw the show.
Tonight the big tent undoubtedly
will he packed from sawdust to ceil
ing. Many people have come In from
neighboring towns just to take in
the show, and the local constituency
will do Its full duty.
A visit to the show grounds dis
closed the fact, after seeing the
flower decorated tables In the mess
department, arranged by "Mine

Overmau, Indicted on the charge of
wilfully defacing a building not his
own. Overman is accused of de
molishing a cabin owned by George
Cnrlon and situated on a tract of
land east of Myrtle Creek and home
steaded by Carlon. Overmnn claims
the land by virtue of au alleged prior
mining location. A contest over tbe
claim In the United States land office
In Roseburg resulted In favor of Carlon.
Richard Wllletts, huttermaker at
the Douglas County Creamery, was
arraigned this morning on a charge
of marketing short-weight butter.
He entered a plea of not guilty and
furnished a bail bond of fifiO. W.
E. Catterlin. of Grants Pass, deputy
state food Inspector, is the prosecut
ing witness. The indictment against
Wllletts. filed bv the grand jury on
Tuesday, accused the defendant of
"preparing packages of butter pur
porting to be .12 ounces In weight,
when. In fact, they weighed less."
After a session of 14 hours, a jury
at 7 o'clock this morning tiled a ver
dirt in favor of E. G. Young & Co.,
of Oakland, and against John Neuner
and nine other residents of Glendale.

In the case of J. L. Watson vs.
Gust G-ustafson, a suit to replevin a
horse, a jury returned a verdict in

C. H.- Foster, the local veterinary
surgeon, and AV. I... Moore, proprie
tor of the Farmers' Feed Stables,
were hurled from a buggy on the
Edenbower road last evening, when
rho vehicle was tipped over by ft colt
being led behind it. The colt was
scared at an approaching automobile
and in n mad effort to get out of the
way dashed against one of the rear
wheels of the buggy, overturning it.
Both men wore badly shaken up and
Mr, Foster, In addition, sustained a
bruised kneo and hip.
A very bad automobile accident
occurred near J. H. Halley's farm,
between Oakland and Rice Hill, last
Monday evening, when n machine oc
cupied by a man and wife, their two
children nnd a chaffeur, went over
an embankment and was badly
smashed up. The husband is re
ported to have sustained severe
bruises and the smaller child was so
badlv hurt that It will' be a long time
recovering. The party are tourists
who refuse to divulge their names.
The workman who was knocked
down nnd run over bv tin automobile
at Siltherlln Tuesday Is reported to
he recovering at Oakland, where he
was taken for medical treatment.
Wni. T. Smnll, the driver of the ma
chine, is being detained here by the
authorities, who will investigate the
affair. The name of the Injured
man, who is a carpenter from Eu
gene, has not been learned. Small
stated today that ho was running the
machine at a very slow rate of speed
and that he shouted a warning to the
man In time for him to get out of
the way.

ley's comet will begin its transit
across the face of lite sun at 7:39
o'clock. Pacific time, tonight. This
is the latest computation by Profes
sor l.uesclitier, astronomer at the
University of California. In a
special article written for the United
Press. Professor l.ueschner says:
"The comet will be In transit
across the face of the sun tonight.
The time of ingress will he 7:3! o'
clock nnd of egress 8:37 o'clock.
The earth will enter the tnll or the
comet nt 5 o'clock this evening nnd
emerge nt 1 1 o'clock, passing through
at the rate of 50 miles a second."
After the passage through the
tall has been completed, the comet
will not be visible again until May
20, for It will travel in a path ap
parently so close to that of the sun
that Its light will be lost in the efful
gence of the greater luminary. On
May 23 Hie best view of any time
will be obtained, for on that night
will occur a total eclipse of the moon,
when the sky will he darkened and
the comet will have a chance to shlno
forth in all its glory.
Prof. l.ueschner said the earth
would not pass through tho exact
center of the tall tonight, but n little
to one side. He does not believe
the visitors will be dlscernnble with
the naked eye.

WASHINGTON, Mav 18. Ofllcial
data Issued today says that Halley's
comet will traverse the earth nt
11:20 o'clock, enstern time, tonight.
The estimated dimensions of the tail
are 1.000.000 miles thickness and
20.000.000 miles In length. The
distance between the earth and the
head of the comet is placed at 14,-
000.000 miles. Astronomers predict
an Illumination of the western skies,
possibly a. brilliant meteoric display.

ture of the Ballinger investigation
today wns the prediction that George
W. Perkins, of .1. P. Morgan 4i t o

witness. Recorded letters before the
committee, marked "personal and
confidential.." to Ballinger, shows
that Ballinger, soon after he became
interior Secretary, recommended
City Engineer Thompson, of Seattle,

the country with a view to railroad
evnloitation. Ballinger had been In
communication with Perkins, and he
said in a letter to Thompson that he
had recommended him when Perkins
Insisted on Ballinger suggesting

Balllnaer. saving he could supply
another man for Perkins upon Hal-
linker's ri'uuest. On .Inly 4, 10
Ballinger wrote Perkins, thanking
him for inviting his son, Edward, to
take the Alaskun trip, but declining
to give his consent.

state create Clarke county from the
north part of Grant county. In

wore quite generously signed. While

shoulder wns badly wrenched when
the Pole slammed him to the mat for

It was announced that Dr. Roller
came on for tho second bout against
the advice of his seconds, and when
he got into the ring his left arm hung
helpless by his side. Zbyszsko
quickly got behind Roller nnd when
he began working on the Injured arm
Dr. Roller's seconds threw up the
sponge. The time for the first fall

Slate Bank at Myrtlo Creek has
