stood at the busiest hour of the day at the corner -if Loudon Bridge, wit h. a big pewter dish

he besought all who passed to take, one no sliings to it of any sort. But one and all eith
er stared incredulously, frowned suspiciously, or smiled knowingly, and passed on uiirich
ed. And at tlw end of the hour, the gentleman who knew human nature, had just as many
sovereigns in his dish as when he stalled, and the other party to the wager had to pay up.

who was laid to rest in the Odd Fol
lows' cemetery. Hundreds of sor

Maker, of St. (ieorgu's church, of
which Mrs. Vial was a beloved mem
ber. In the cortege that moved to
Ihe strains of a dirge played by the

bers of the Klks lodges of this city
and Medford. acting as honorary es
cort. Beautiful floral offerings for
the grave were in abundance. Im
mensely popular and a leaning spiru
in many entertaining social art airs,
Mrs. Vial leaves the remembrance of
a life of Imparted sunshine and
cheer and activity for the enjoyment
of others. She was numbered among
the most energetic workers for the
success of the present carnival. She
was to have taken part lu a playlet
planned for this evening, and on ac
count of her sudden and tragic death
