III., April 27. Several persona were Injured and property damaged to the amount of several thousand dollars when eight bulls and one female elephant of the Klngllng Circus stampeded here to day. After escaping, the elephants moved for some time In a hunch and then separated. They stopped for nothing except brick and stone build ings. Small frame structures col lapsed, and fences were pushed aside and trees uprooted. At the home of William Mlllnr, the three elephants found there was not Bufllclfnt room for tlutm to pass be tween the summer kitchen and resi dence, and pushed the kitchen aside, badly frightening the persons within. At the home of Joseph Peebles, after overturning a shed and killing a horse, one of the animals attacked Peebles and hurled him against the side of the house. He 1b now In a critical condition. Harney O'Nell waB thrown from a wagon when the hordo of elephant! dashed down a sldo street and In front of his team. F. Krabbe, a keeper, who was assisting In taking three bulls to the tent, was hurled against the side of a house and serl ouBly injured. Three other persons were slightly Injured during the stampede. More than 100 homes were visited by the elephants, and the damage will prob ably aggregate $9,000 or $10,000. Truck gardens, orchards, and many buildings were ruined. Henry, in Portland, tlu contract for building 125 miles of the Oregon Trunk Hallway was let to Mr. Henry, of Seattle. No figures can be obtained as to the amount of the bids. A promi nent contractor yesterday gave $:. .100,01)0 as a possible estimate of the total cost. Mr. Henry Is to commence grading immediately. His contract covers the construction of the line from Madras to the northern boundary of the Klamath Indian Reservation, which Is as far as the Oregon Trunk line has announced Its intention of going, nit hough, lu all probability, a continuation will later be made to Sun Francisco to compeJe with the .Southern Pacific. The completion of the contract will give the Oregon Trunk 234 miles of track, the cent ract for t he llrst 1 09 miles having been awarded to Porter Itros., some time ago. Henry will want at least 2000 men for the extension of the Oregon Trunk from Madras to kiumatu Indian Reservation. Thus, at least suoo men could find "in ploy incut out of Portland within four weeks In railroad work alone. In logging, farming, and other lines there Is probably a demand for 2000 more. A shortage of 10,u)0 laborers, with hundreds crying hard times and had luck, seems an anomaly, but the figures are authentic.
