' ."- JI The committee lias been hampered In this work by having short time in which to consuinate arrangements, and the programme, while not an extensive one, we are in hopes will make a deep and lasting Impression with the Portland business men who are members of this pnrty. It has been the idea to exhibit the products or Roseburg and Doug'as county und display the many points of excel lence which we claim in Ibis district. Arrangements have been made for a couple of nice salmon fresh from the river to be placed on the illning car. which will last them until they reach Portland and will serve ' to retain their memories nnd good wishes toward Roseburg. Through the kindness of Mr. Mc Clallen nnd others, we have been able to secure some strawberries which will also be served in the dining car. Mrs. .1. D. We should give this delegation a musing reception. The arrival and subsequent efforts of Senator 11. K. Shively failed today to bring peace between the warring factions of Democrats, who open their state convention here tonight. The question over which the dele gates have split is whether the con vention shall Indorse a candidate for the United States Senate or whether a primary election to name a candi date shall be called. The crisis came yesterday when John E. Lamb, of Terre Haute, vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee, denounced ns a "boss" Thomas Taggert, and declared that the convention should not be a "Tag gart Christmas tree." Both Lamb and Tnggart are candi dates for tile United States Senate. Lnmb advocates the plan originally proposed by Governor Marshall, that the convention indorse a candidate. Taggart proposes the primary method, but announces thnt he will cast his lot with the convention If the endorsement plan is adopted.
