Halley's comet can be seen with
the naked eye in Roseburg. The
long-lost wanderer was spotted be
fore duybreak Sunday morning by a
few volunteer astronomers, but some
who saw the comet did not recognize
it, for the tail was not visible. The
comet could not be confused with
Venus, the morning star, and was
especially noticeable for the terrific
velocity with which It dashed upward
from the horizon and kept going
until the glare of the approaching
sun swallowed It up. Although It
can be seen from the streets, a much
better view can be had from Mt.
Nebo.
But where was the comets tan?
Maybe It was mlslnld, anyway: there
as no trace of the appendage mat

streamers threw casual observers off
the track.
It was about 3:30 that the comet
'as seen a slight distance above the
eastern horizon, some 7 degrees
north of eaBt. or about the distance
of 14 moons north of the east point
of the compass. At first the comet
nneared as a bright star; in fact,
that is the way it appeared all the
time, but as watchers expect to Iden
tify the comet only by Its tail, the
faet that the comet was the comet
did not sink into the minds of ama
teur astronomers immediately. Hal
ley's comet, however, soon demon
strated that It was the comet and
nothing else, for it moved so fast as
to rivet the attention or tne most in
