Mr. Stephens was born In Tennes
see, January 17. I Kilo. At the axe of
la years, while living In Kansas, he
started to make his own way In the
world and In a short time he was In
the employ of the (ioverninent as a
teamster. In 1851! he emigrated to
California and engaged In mining
until the following year, when he
moved to Oregon, settling first near
Sheridan. Yamhill county. In 1S1I4.
Mr. Stephens became a resident of
Wilbur, this eounly. coming here
from Ooldendale, Wash., where he
lived for 8 years, following a brief
period spent In Douglas county In the
early '70s. During August of last
year, Mr. Stephens moved from Wil
bur to Olendale, In rapidly failing
health, and nn March 9, of this year,
he was contlued to his bed, from
which he never arose.
Mr. Stephens was a member of the
Primitive llaptlst church. During
the Indian wars of lS'ifi-lid he
served as a volunteer under Captain
Williams In both Oregon and Wash
ington. On April 12, 1S57. he was
married to Anna K. Thornton, who
survives him. together with the fol
lowing f of the 12 children who
were horn to them: Mrs. F. M. Hor
ton. Mrs. II. S. Stephens, fleo. F.
Stephens nnd Charles I. Stephens, all
of (Mendale; Mrs. I. T. Agee. of
Mapleton. Lane county. Or., and Mrs.
D. A. Shearer, of Coldendale. Wash.
The Hrst four named nnd two of the
Id grandchildren were nt Mr.
Stephens' bedside when ho breathed
his last.
