Special can sos. such as high tariffs,

wanes, and increasing expomlitures
of the rich, have ununited to raise
prices. The result seems to be the
outcome of special forces on the
poods side of the price-ratio working
to raise the prices of poods, more
than inventions aud progress In the
r.s have been able to depress them.
In this respect the latter differs from
the earlier period.
Lastly, it must be admitted that,
aside from the higher prices of many
staple articles, our standard of liv
ing has changed with the growing
wealth of the country. Each family
now wishes more expensive food,
more pictures and books and those
of a higher price, more bicycles mid
automobiles, more horseback riding,
more traveling, stays at higher
priced hotels, passagu on more ex
pensive steamers, than formerly all
to keep up in the procession with the

enormously In numbers. Kvery one
expects, as a matter of course, to
buy fruits and vegetables out of
season such as a very short time
ago were considered within the
rea c h of only the I a r g es t pu rses .
Our kitchen economy ts quite too
wasteful: wp throw away fats and
buy lard to take their place. May
it not be the psychological hour to
call for tbe creation of a new aris
tocracy of the simple life, of those
who care for the reality and not for
the shadow, for the true inward
pleasures of the mind rather than
for the external, evanescent show ?
Mav it not be high time to create a
free-masonry of those who do not
ask how much one has. or how
much one knows, but what one ts?
tiold. In the sense of riches, may be
the root of all evil: but gold, in the
