Such stuff has ab solutely no value as advertising mut ter, and the scheme Is a time worn one which most up-to-date towns look upon with abhoreiice. The community should not contribute a cent to Hindi wort hless advertising, 'tnd I hope that the sensible men of Itosebtirg will be guided by my ex perience in such matters and take the advice which I so candidly give for tho benefit of the community. Although the article endorsing the plan of the American Progress Maga zine, and stating that the matter would be furnished by the Rosebiirg Commercial Club, appeared In The Review upon tho statements mado by the magazine's representatives, desire to say that one of the maga zine's representatives called upon me to request that I sanction the scheme and furnish him with my picture and data, etc., for an article I distinctly told him In plain Eng lish that I would not stand for the proposition that I knew all about such things and then? was no value whatsoever In the scheme. IPlI'Ufg) fSD- .Teb. 24. I V I 0 duH REV. WM. E. THORXTON. Wm. E. Thornton waa born In Missouri, Feb. 27, 1941. and died at Springfield, Oregon, Feb. 26, lt10. being 6i yearB old. He grew to manhood In Missouri. In company with hlB family he crossed the plains In 1865, coming with ox teams. They located on Oak Creek, In Douglas county, Oregon, In 1868. He then moved to Califor nia, where he stayed 16 months, re turning to his former home on Oak Creek, then to Olalla, where he took up a homestead, moving a few years later to Happy Valley where he re mained for about 8 years. He moved from there to Eastern Oregon, locat ing In Mayvllle, where he lived for 7 or 8 years, going from there to Eastern Washington, After some years he came back to Oregon, locat ing nt Dlllard. He went to Spring field about three years ago, where ho has since resided. Mr. Thornton was converted In 1869 and was bap' ::ed Into the fel lowship of the Oak Creek Baptist church hy Rev. S. S. Martin. . Soon after he was ordained as a deacon. In which position he proved himself to he a true servant of God. He went with Rev. J. C. Richardson and Brother S. S. Mart ft to Coos county, being the first Baptist missionaries to go Into that new and destitute Held. They held a meeting at Sum ner and laid the foundation for the church building there, in these mis sionary tours In company with dif ferent ministers ho often felt called upon to preach the Gospel, but like many others, felt his un worthiness and Inability. After going to East ern Oregon the demand was so ur gent he gave up to God and began the work of the ministry. He was ordained in the Mayvllle Baptist church in 1890, and became their pastor. He was present and as sisted In the organization of the Middle Oregon Association, doing missionary w6rk In various parts of the state and supplying the desti tute churches. God honored his ministry with splendid success. Many souls were born into the King dom of God. He was called to the work in Eastern Washington and Idaho. He organized the church at Steptoe Butte and at Deep Creek. For one year he was In charge of the work at Palouse City, and In all this section he went from place to place doing evangelistic work and laying the foundations for strong c.u rches. On coming hack to Oregon he took up work on the old fields where he had begun his Christian work. On coming to Springfield ho took up the Garage and Machine Shop About March 1st we v, open a FIRST CLASS GARAGE in connection with ottr machine shop and general black smithing business. Our Garage will be in charge of an expert automobile workman. We are installing a lathe together with necessary tools to make this department the most complete in Southern Oregon. The last year be had been engaged as pastor al Creswell, and preached at the Avers school house at the latter place the Sunday before he was taken 111. In all these years of earnest work for the Master, God has blessed him and made him a blessing. A clean, strong earnest Christian, living above the world and letting his light shine for God and the right. He was loved by all who knew him. He was married in Missouri. Feb. 18, 1858, to Miss Susana Cheno weth. To them were born 11 child ren, four having gone before. Those liviDg are Samuel, of Portland; Mrs Ella Bros!, of Douglas county; Or- ville G. T., of Springfield; Mrs. C, J Wiley, of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Ollie II. Murray, of Holtville, Cal.; J. E Thornton, Salem. Ore.; Mrs. Bertha Westrope, of Springfield. He leaves his aged wife and a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchild ren, besides the sous and daughters mentioned above. Our dear brother had fought a good fight and had kept the faith. He was completely reconciled to go He said "I am ready; the Lord's will be done." So he fell asleep In Jesus. Peaceful be his sleep and glorious bis awakening. The funeral service was preached at the Baptist church at Springfield by Rev. Day, of Springfield, who took for his text the 7th and 8th verses of Timothy. The body was shipped to Roseburg and laid to rest in the Oak Creek cemetery. X. X. X. Swantle Peterson went to Cottage Grove on business today. Claude McDonald, of Elkton, depu ty assessor for that locality, is In the city today. Al Kent, the Elkton sheep king, arrived in Roseburg Monday even ing to attend to business matters. Section Foreman Allen, of the S. P. Co,, has been transferred to this city from Dlllard, succeeding C. H N'eal, resigned. Mrs. Mary Chaney returned home to Myrtle Creek this morning, after a short visit here with her son, Prof, Thurman Chaney. W. A. Burr, the ex-music dealer of this city, Is preparing to engage In the real estate business In Port land. The House public lands committee has reported favorably the administra tion bill making an appropriation of 500,000 for the survey of public lands within railroad land grants.
