Austin Merrill, formerly bartender at The Imperial, left this morning for Arizona to secure a climatic change for his falling health. He was accompanied by his brother, who arrived here recently from the fam ily home In West Virginia. George W. Peavy has been engaged as professor of forestry at the Ore gon Agricultural College to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Professor E. R. Lake. Mr. Peavy Is a graduate of both the literary de partment and the forestry school of the University of Michigan. He has been In the Government Forest Ser vice for several yenrs. Much of this time has been spent ln the Pacific Coast states. He resigned the posi tion of Chief of Planting In the states of California and Nevada to accept the position at the College. Mr. E. A. Feb. 6 William Davenport Hare, pioneer of 1853, and for many years a noted orator of the Northwest, died at the family home this morning from pneumonia. In 1870 Mr. Huro was elected to the State Legislature and in 1872 he was named as one of the Grunt elec tors and made an active campaign over the state. He was a brilliant orator and one of the best extempor aneous speakers in the Northwest. He was appointed Collector of Cus toms at Astoria, and served eight years In this office. From 1883 to 1886 he was State Senator from Washington county. He was made a Mason ln Tuallty Lodge, of Masons, lu this city in 1862 and in 1871 was chosen grand master of Oregon. He wub promi nently connected with the Ancient Order of United Workmen in the days of the great strength of that order, and was several limes the state executive of the organization and was also supreme representative. Re moval of Albany College to Eugene and the construction there of a $50,- 000 club house for Presbyterian young men is sought by Dr. Joseph Wilson Cochran, secretary to the Presbyterian board of education, who was in Portland yesterday. The time for denominational schools to stand out against the stnte university is gone," said Dr. Cochran. "We should build in their Bhadow, availing ourselves of their education- ill advantages.
