The Oregon Homes Company, composed of prominent Portland und Eastern capitalists, have purchased the fam ous (Jlenbrook property In the Cow Creek Valley, In Douglas county. This property Is located 30 miles south of Koseburg and consists of 2180 acres, Of this tract about 1700 acres Is located In a solid block, while the remuinlng 480 acres Is situated about n mile awny in two tracts, one of 200 ucres and the other of 280 acres. Property values In Douglas county have advanced at a remarkable rate during the last few years, with the development of that section as a fruit raising center lust begun. The announcement of the sale of the Cleuhrook farm will have a decided impetus toward the further develop ment of the entire Umpqua Valley. Of the fruit tract Just purchased 000 ucres Is in alluvial valley land, 500 ucres is second bottom laud and the rest is gently sloping bench land and bills. The Oregon Homes Company, which secures control of tho big tract, has Just been Incorporated for $100,000. with o dices In Portland. The olllccrs of tho company are: E. H. McKarland, president und treas urer; Richard M. Hall, vice-president, and Rlnaldo M. Hall, secretary. Mr. Mi-Karl a ml is u prominent Portland business man. Richard M. Hall is a prominent grain merchant of Peoria, 111., and is u man of wealth und busi ness stmirilng In his community. Ulnuldo M. Hall was for soverul years udverllsing manager of the Harrlman lines In this section and knows Oregon from one end to the other. It was through his efforts that this farm was secured. The .Southern Pacific railroad runs through the center of this farm. There are III a acres of 12-yenr-old orchard on the place, consisting of prunes, apples, peaches and pears. The annual average return from the fruit as tho orchard now stands 1b $10,000. When dried the prunes are loaded from the drier warehouse on the Southern Pacific and switched to the door of the drier, the switch nt that place being one of the longest on the entire lino. One of the most valuable assets of the place Is a reservoir on a hill 150 feet high and about 2000 feet from the prune drier. The water from the moil u tain stream feeding tho reser voir Is conveyed around the hill In a small but good Irrigation ditch. J lu water from the reservoir coming from the hills back of tho farm and having a high source. Is pure and cool. From tho reservoir four-Inch pipes convey water to the valley be low, thence to the prune drier, farm houses and barns. The source of the water Is feet above sen level and the force from the reservoir Is such that the water ca.i he thrown over a three story building. The driver of the stage between here and Florence yesterday came upon the dead body of a man on the bench about a mllo north of the mouth of tho Umpqun river. The body was wholly naked, except for a pair of shoes, and was so beaten by the waves as to be unrecognizable. This Is the third body found north of the Umpqua river within a week. Chief Engineer Haines and his surveyors will start surveying ast from Koseburg when they have com pleted the survey Into Marshfleld. Tho two surveying parties are now working on the Marshfleld end of the survey and will have the field work llufshed within a short time, and be ready to continue toward Dolse. The various reports concerning the probable resumption of construction on the Drain line by the Southern Pa cific are causing considerable com ment but most of tho people appear dubious. No official announcement hns been made by the Southern Pa- caflc and while many "unofficial but reliable" reports are in circulation to the effect that work will start on the Drain line us soon as the weather will permit, not a great deal of con fidence Is expressed In them. Chris ItfismuHHen, of Bandon, who Is lu Marshfleld, says that it is cer tain that the construction of the Handon and Port Orford road will bo started as soon us the weather will permit In the spring. Ho says that a good portion of the road can be built for less than $5000 per mile.
