The Western Pacific will operate Its trains over the Oregon Trunk Line, and Into Portland over the North Bank road. "While the Western Pacific will have no financial liKercut in the Ore gon Trunk Line railroad, It will pos sess all esiieiitlal privileges of an In dependent railroad tine operating over that road." said a Pacific Coast railroad man, who is In Portland to day. "As I understand It, the present line of the Nevada, California & Oregon, will be used from Its junc tion with Hie Western Pacific near Honey Lake, Cat., northward to it present terminus at A I turns, whl.-b Is In the south end of the Uoose Lake valley. From that, point the line will he extended -to Lakevlew to meet the Oregon Trunk Line. ' The N. C. & O. is already built and operating Into Altutaa, which It but 00 miles south of Lakevlew, Or., and the Intervening dihtanuce offer j a fine route and easy grade through the Goose Lake valley, with very large tonnage awaiting a railroad. In that valley private capital is now de veloping au Irrigation project which will water some 100,000 acres of extremely productive land, and this Is an attractive field for railroad con struction. Tho business of this field would be competitive between Port land and Sun Francisco merchant. " More than a year ago Kdwln Gould, in the midst of (he financial troubles of the Western Pacific, publicly stated at Los Angeles that the West ern Pacific would build through Ore gon and Into Portland "In the near future." The prediction is now to be made good, but tb rough the igoncy of tho Hill deal In the West- orn Pacific. The lino from Lakevlew northward will undoubtedly come through Ihr Summer Lake and Silver Lake val leys, and across the Fort Rock country to connect with the new pro jected line of the Oregon Trunk from tho Columbia river to Madrr.s and Bend. This route has not been openly claimed by the Oregon Trunk, but the Harrlman ieople ran nut the tine tli roe yea rs ago and ma ;1 e a permanent turvey for o lire over this route as the best one that was to he found from Lakevlew northward. This -project verifies the reported targe pu rebuses of lauds by Oregon Trunk Line officials in the Goose Lake valley and at various points be tween lakevlew and Madras, while It is a significant fact that they have made no purchase- In the Klamath basin, 70 miles to the westward of the Goose Lake valley. The project verifies the reported remodeling of tint Nevada, California & Oregon line to make a junction with Western Pacific in .northeast ern California In a well selected junc tion, located with a view to securing the bvtv: grades and ttie saving of .'on.-itnicllon of additional trackage. At ttils point the main line of the Western Pacific turns due south for a distance of 3H mites, and at a point "ailed Chlleoot I! veers west through Dockwlth Pass and thence southward to Oakland and San Francisco. The effect of such a development of the railroad facilities of south ciitral Oregon, It Is pointed out, would be to place that whole region In closer touch with San Francisco than with Portland, as to distance, but It Is believed thai the level grades of the Deschutes river route would more than offset the uuestion In favor of Portland as a trade center.
