Roseburg. Heretofore there was
but one wire extending by way of
Myrtle Point to Roseburg over the
mountains. Four copper wires ore
now being put up for the whole dis
tance and the old wire will be left
up, giving five through to Roseburg.
A large force is stringing the wires
and will continue at it until the
rains make It impossible to work.

not tamped full of some good material
like that of which the road Is con
structed will become filled with water
and will be mode deeper und -wider by
each passing vehicle. A hole which
could have been filled with a shovelful
of material will soon ueed a cartful.
The rut or hole to be repaired should
be cleared of dust, mud or water and
just sufficient good fresh earth placed
in it to be evou with the surrouuding
surface after having been thoroughly

furnish an inexhaustible supply of
seeds for the ndjnlning farm lands.
The farmer in Germany who hns con
quered the weeds on his ground need
have no thought of them being started
agnln from uncultivated or uncared for
land along the roadways. There are
no weeds, no mud, no chuck holes, no
sand stretches In tlie rouds.
One of the simplest and most praetl
ral measures that could be taken for
the betterment of roads In the United
Stntes would be to reduce their width
to from one-third to one-half of what
they now are.
In the United States public high
ways In the stntes given below may be
estimated as follows: Minnesota, 80,
000; Wisconsin. 00,000; Michigan, 00,
000; Iowa. "0.OO0; KuiiRns. 70,000; Ne
braska. 50.000; Missouri. 80.000; Illi
nois, 80,000; Indiana, 70,000; Ohio, 80,
000; total, 700.000 miles. Reducing the
width of these public highways, which

counties in the different states should
agree to maintain the highway after It
has been completed. The rapid spread
of Intcreat lit automobiles has aroused
the Georgia men to the urgent need of
better roads In the aouth, and they be

Atlanta to the national capital would
give a great impetus to the good roads
movement all over the south.
It has been suggested by the project
ors of tho proposed highway that the
authorities of each county agree to
round up, roll and ditch one of the ex
biting connecting ronds from border to
border and Improve It with a macadam
surface as soon as possible. It is be
lieved thnt this ptun can be carried out

over a continuous stretch of fairly
good roads by the middle of the com
