OREGON CITY, Or., Oct. 29. Walter C. McKee, for three years superintendent of the Oregon City schools, was arrested this morning at Portland by Constable Miles charged with larceny hy bailee of $42. GO. He was brought to this city nnd takon before Justice of the Peace Hamson and released upon a deposit of $160 cash hall, his bonds men being Dr. George Hoeye and W. J, Carson, the latter being the father of McKee'B wife. The preliminary examination la set for next Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock, but the regulur term of the Circuit Court will be convened next Monday and a grand Jury empaneled. If the cuse Is taken In hand by the grand Jury and an Indictment re turned. It will not be necessary to hold the examination In the Justice Court. Whllo the specific charge against McKee Ib larceny by bailee, he Is nccused of stealing money belonging to tho student body of the Ore ;on City High school. During his three years' Incumbency as city superin tendent bo waB entrusted with all the 'Indent body funds and acted as treasurer for all student enterprises. Contrary to the usual procedure In !li)'.h schools, tho students were ever regulnrly organized tied had no I'llcers. Time and again McKee wns iskrd to make reportH, but they were never forthcoming. It was suspected that he had received money from student enterprises, but the matter wns nol brought to the attention of the hoard T directors until recently, when It vns discovered that anywhere from $200 to $1100 collected hy the pupils of tho High school and turned over o MeKoo was unaccounted for. A good Illustration of what young pear orchards will yield when prop erly cared for is shown by the re turns from the HlUcrest orchard. In liartletts, 440 7-year-old trees, cov ering 5.86 acres, yielded 1489 boxes, or 3.38 boxes per tree, or 253.92 boxes per acre, which netted en average per box of $1.93, or a net return of $490.40 per acre. All ex penses did not excedd $50 an acre, leaving a profit of $440 per acre. In Howells, 342 7-year-old trees, covering 4.C6 acres, yielded 1393 boxes, 4.07 boxes to the tree, 305.48 boxes to the acre. The average net returns were $2.35 per box, or $2373,55, at the rate of $717.88 per acre. The cost per acre Is estimated hy the owner at $50, making a net protlt of $067.88 per acre. What an old pear orchard will do Is shown by the yield of the Buck eye orchard, near Talent, owned by W. O. Estep.
