HPBAYINO FOK PEACH JtMfjllT NOW IN OIUKK. lU-piitalfoii of ()ncoii Fruit HulTT from I'liiideninulioii O. A. (J. Olvci Funnultt. (H. 8. Jackson. O. A. C). Now In the time to Hpray for the peach hliKht bo prevnlnnt In Oregon. It Is hoped that evury fcrowur of peach en will spray th 1h fall and bo help to eradicate thin dleaBe from the state. The reputation of Orngon peaches Is seriously threntenod by the pres ence of the fruit apot on shipped ppartipg, as fs Bhown by the number of shipments that have been con demned by watchful fruit inapectura. The disease known as peach blight, or California peach blight, Ib caused hv a fungus technically known as Coryneum beqeiinkll. It occurs In three forms: on the twigs, where It produces a blight of the buds and sometlm.es small cankers at the baae of blighted buds, which may girdle twigs and small branches; as a leaf spot, producing a shot-hole effect; and as a fruit Bpot. It Is In the lat ter form that the grower most fre quently notices the din ease and the one which he Is liable to consider the most serious. It Is, however, to the eradication of the twig blight that he should direct his most stren uous efforts. If the twig blight should be thoroughly eradicated there' would be no source of Infec tion for1 the young fruit In growing In the spring, and It will be free from the fruit spot at maturity. ' The disease under discussion f paBlly controlled by epraylug with the Dordeaux mixture In the fall. Use the, 6-C-ftO formula and apply an soon as the, fruit Is off and before the fall rains begin, or us anon there aftor as the weather permits. It in Imporlnnt that a special effort b" made to, cover, all the twlga ami branches thoroughly. If nenlo lu present ubo lime-sulphur (30 degrees Han mo) diluted 1 to 12. In very severe cnBes It frequently happem thflt one fall spraying will not b sultlclent to control the fruit Bpot. In such cnttns summer Kprnyfng may be succeflHrully practiced. A recent bulletin from the Oregon Agricultural Collego and Kximrlinent Station, by Prof. A. II. Cordley anil C. C.. Onto, entitled "Hpraylpg fn Fruit' Peach SH)t," gives the result? of two yeara' experimenting lu fnil and summer spraying for the fruit spot, and It h) conclusively Known that this form of tho d Incuse may may ' bo ' practically eradicated by summer spraying with Bordeaux mixture, or llme-su.lptiur. If Bor deaux 'Is' preferred, and It Beemn to give slightly better results, the 3-6-R0 formula should bo used; If lime suphur Is lifted an a nn miner Hpray n stock solution registering 110 di'greeK Pen nine should be diluted 1 to 2f. The first application sliould he, mnde shout May 10 and the' second nbout June 1. The fall spraying wan found to be the moat Important of all. Continued use of the fall sprnys will be found Biifllclent to hold the disease In check after It Is once under control. Kvery grower of peach en should hnvo a copy of the bulletin mentioned above ami It will be scut to any one on application to the O. A. C. Kx perlment station. Specify Bulletin 106. MARSHF1ELD, Or., Oct. 28. "I have offered the promoters of the Onkland & Tidewater railway $10, 000 for a railroad ticket from Oak land, Or., to Coos Bay. provided I can use the ticket within eighteen months," said C. A. Smith, the Min neapolis lumberman, yesterday. "Mr. Purdy. who Is here promoting" the road," Bald Mr. Smith, "tells m It will be built within eighteen months and I told him If such was done I would give him 910,000 for a ticket. And I wrote the same proposition to Mr. Penera, or Oak land, who is the vice-president. I do not know anything of the InB'de plans of the railroad further than what I am told, but I would be will ing to give that amount to see a rail road come into Coos Bay within the next 18 months."
