EUGENE, Oct. il. County Judgo
G. R. Chrlsmau today tendered to
Governor Benson his resignation,
and Attorney Helmus W. Thompson,
of this city, was appointed In his
place, receiving notice of his appoint
ment by telegraph early this after
noon. Mr. Thompson was at once
.sworn in by County Clerk Lee, and
assumed the duties of the office.
Judge Chrlsman'a resignation
, comes as a surprise to many, but not
,to a few of hlB friends and other
county officials at the court house.
It has been known for some time
1 past that the Judge contemplated go
ing to Southern California to remain
during the winter, and iu order to do
,so he deemed It best to resign. He
will leave for Los Angeles In about a
,'month and will remain there with his
wife and son, Chester, who have al-
: ready preceded him and who spent
last winter and spring there.
Judge ChrlBman was elected county
Judge of Lane county In June, 1904.
i on the Republican ticket, and served
a full term of four years until the
'election of 1908, whea.be was re
elected, both - times by a large ma-
. jorlty. He has Nerved the people
well and has been responsible for a
number of reforms Inaugurated dur
ing his term of office. He has been
an advocate for some time past of a
larger court house, and In his fare
well official letter to Commissioners
Edwards and Price recommends that
the court In making up tho tax levy
next year to make provisions for an
addition to the present court house.
He has alBO done much toward tho
betterment of tho county highways
'and bridges. It Is wilh regret that
the general public learns of his res
ignation.
