Mike Nlchatlch and Albert Murray,
the two escaped convicts, who eluded
the posse after the pitched battle on
the banks of the Lucklamute river
Sunday morning, were captured near
the ranch of Lou Ktapleton, four miles
south of Bueua Vista, this afternoon.
This completes the manhunt for the
five convicts who overpowed their
guards and escaped from the prison
authorities Friday afternoon. Two
are now dead, two ure seriously In
jured and the fifth, Albert Murray,
has forfeited all privileges of a
trusty.
Nlchatlch and Murray were this
afternoon found concealed in a straw
stack by a little boy and were cap
tured after a running fight of a mile
across the fields. Murray surren
dered first, but Nlchatlch kept on
running and several members of the
posse opened fire.
The desperate outlaw was seen to
stumble and fall, but ho was almost
instantly on his feet and running like
a deer for the underbrush. In a hall
of bullets he gained the shelter of
t he t rees, and the p 11 rs tiers pa 11 sed
for an Instant before plunging Into
the timber. While deciding upon a
plan of action, Nlchatlch shouted
from the shelter of the underbrush
that he would surrender.
Nlchatlch's wounds are only flesh
wounds and not serious In any re
spect. He maintained his sullen de
position throughout, and even when
Warden Frank Curtis took him In
charge, ho absolutely refused to utter
a sound, either of complaint nbout
his wounds or to answer any of
the questions put to him by the offi
cers, Nlchatlch Had Record.
Nlchatlch Is the same man whr
participated in a pitched buttle with
Linn county officers In the streets or
Sweet Home, Linn county, In July.

from being nbot. As a result of the
shooting up of Sumpter, Duncan and
Carter were convicted of assault with
a dangerous weapon and were sent
to the penitentiary fnr a term of five
years, which expired April lit, litnu.
They were met at the gales of the
penitentiary by Baker cottntv ..m,.,.r
and taken back there to stand trial
for the theft of horses. Tbey were
given indeterminate sentence- f fro-u
one to seven years, arriving here on

former county treasurer and ex
postmaster of this city, died this
morning, October ly, 19U9, at the
home of her sou, George frater, ai
Riddle. Mrs. Frater was 67 years
of age. The funeral will be held
from the Elks' Temple in Roseburg
jThurBday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with
! services conducted by Rev. J. E.
Burkhart, of the Presbyterian cburctt.
Interment will follow in the Odd Fel
lows' cemetery. The funeral will be
under the auspices of the Ladles of
the G. A. K., aud the W. R. C of
this city, of which societies Mrs.
Frater was a member.
Previous to moving to Riddle about
one year ago. when her health be
gan failing, Mrs. Frater bad resided
In Roseburg for 17 years. Before
that period she lived at Olalla. Look
ing Glasa aud Civil Bend. She was
a native of Ohio. Mrs. Frater is sur
vived by her husband and the fol
lowing sous and daughters:
George Frater, of Riddle; James
W. Frater, of Portland; Mrs. Carl
Abraham, of Portland; Mrs. Lincoln
Blackwell, of Gardiner, aud Mrs.
Anna Ireland, of Prinevllle. She al
so leaves a brother and a sister In
Ohio and a brother In California. Mr.
Frater and all of the children, as
well as the sons-fn-law, were at the
patient's bedside when she passed'
away. i
Mrs. Frater was a woman of ex
cellent qualities, and her demise will
be mourned not only by her family,
but by a large circle of friends.

FRANK V. DRAKE,
MINING MAN, DEAD.
PORTLAND, Or., Oct. 18. Colonel
Frank V. Drake, a lawyer and well
known mining man, of the Pacific
Coast, died at Reno, Nev., Saturday
morning after a week's Illness.
Death was due to pneumonia, contrac
ted at Bishop. Cal., where he was
interested in water rights. His re
mains will brought to Portland for
Interment.
Colonel Drake derived his title
from the fact of having been on the
staffs of tiie governors of three state,
Oregon. Washington and Idaho. He
was a native of Belvedere. 11!., and
67 years of age. For a generation
he had been Interested iu mining in
Nevada, Oregon, California and Idaho,
and was said to be the original dis
coverer of the the famous Comstock
silver lode, near Virginia City, Nev.
For several years he devoted himself
to developing quartz mines In Baker
county.
GEORGE H. WILLIAMS
ON ROAD TO RECOVERY.
PORTLAND. Or., Oct. 18. George
H. Williams, the veteran Jurist. Is
believed by his doctors, Dr. K. A. J.
MacKenzie and Dr. A. E. Mackay, to
be well on the road toward recovery.
He was removed from the Good Sa
maritan Hospital to his home a week
ago and his remarkable progress is
eloquent of the Btamina possessed by
one of his advanced years.
Judge Williams was operated upon
at Good Samaritan Hospital Septem
ber zz, his complaint being one pecu
liar to age. At the time It was hardly
believed he had more than a bare
chance for recovery, but slii"e the
visit made to his father's o d friend
by President Taft, Judge Williams
has convalesced even beyond his phy
sicians' most sanguine hopes, and he
is now able to leave bin bed. It h
believed that a very short time will
see his health restored.
