blowers entered the postofllce at
Parkland, a Tacoma suburb, last
night, and made a big haul, after par
tially wrecking the building with
dynamite, used on the safe. They
stole $1500 in government money.
$300 In money belonging to Post
master Erlcksoii, 22,000 stamps of
2 -cent denomination and 20,000 one
cent stamps. Postal inspectors are
working ou the case. Circumstances
show that the job was done by pro
fessional cracksmen.

CHICO, Calif.,- Aug. 28. Two
masked men early this morning en
tered the Southern Pacilic depot at
Kennet and held up P. V. Woods,
the night operator, ordering him to
open the safe. On his bended knees,
"Woods begged for his life, explaining
that the . combination of the rafe
was known only to the day agent.
The robbers then turned their at
tention to the cash drawer, breaking
it open and securing $;t5. There Is
no clew to their Identity.

stupendous swindle of the govern
ment postoffice was revealed today up
on the discovery that thousands of
dollars worth of cancelled stamps
were cleaned and sold throughout
Russia. . Thirty arrests have been
made. Six million cancelled stamps
. were Bold in Moscow alone.
Wife Murderer Hangs.
SAN RAFAKL, Calif.. Aug. 2S.
Delphin Albrite, of Los Angeles
county, Calif., was hanged here today
for the murder of his wife. He went
to his death without any sign of emo
tion and without making any state
ment, lie was pronounced dead lii
minutes after the trap was sprung.

heavy rains of the past lew cViys have
worked incalculable good in all but
extinguishing the forest lires thai
have fur weeks been raging in the
Cowichan district and (hence toward
(he heart ol Vancouver Island. The
very cream of the island's most ac
cessible timber wealth has been lick
ed up by the tires, and the Canadian
Pacific railroad, the Victoria & Che

companies are heavy sufferers, their
losses running far into six figures. It

Sullivan, a week ago a deckhand on
the steamer Charles R. Spencer, of
i'ortland. met. iuslant and terrible
leath this morning while participat
ing in the reuat'a aquatic sports.
Diving from one of the yards of the
British ship Donna Franeesea, he
shot like an arrow into the sea and
was lost. He sank like a rock and
boats circling around in the vicinity
failed to get a glimpse of the body.
Sullivan's dive was fully 120 feet
high. lie had been told it meant sui
cide, but paid no heed to warnings.
Perched on the yard arm he made the
leap to death before the grandstand
and the thronft where the corona
tion of the regatta queen had just
taken place. Thousands of people
saw him make the leap.
Sullivan went down lent first, bul
struck the water on his back, accord
ing to boatmen who were near the
SHt.
Sullivan was about 21 years old
and bad 3 reputation for high diving.
He was a sailor on the United States
;ruiser Charleston up to a short
time ago.

of the University of Oregon during
the comtug year will be the stroug-
est In the history of the Institution,
due to the fact that the working
tools of the University, books, ap
paratus, etc., have been much bet
tered during the Rummer. The lib
rary has been greatly strengthened
by the addition of $10,000 worth of
new books and much new apparatus
bus been ordered for all departments.
A number of new Instructors have
been added, notably a professor of
Geology, a chair that has been vacant
since the dealh of Dr. Condon, n
professor of Political Science, and
associate professor of Psychology, an
assistant- professor of Kducat ion, n
new head librarian and n number of
Instructors In departments that have
been badly crowded.
Work on a new recitation building
to relieve the overcrowded condition
of the oilier buildings Is being push
ed, and It Is hoped to have U ready
for use soon after the opening of
the session. The girls' dormitory
has been completed arid furnished. A

have been erected this sumer.
The number of students will prob
ably be from a third to a half greater
than last year. Applications for ad
mission ore coming to the Registrar
rapidly, and the number on file Is
much larger than usual at this time.
