Roseburg was "at home" today,
and a census or residents and visitors ,
would show a total of at leant 15,000.
The new wide sidewalks were
scarcely wide enough today but the
paved strecU In front were good to
walk on.
Tomperatute only 44 In Roseburg
this morning. Baker City reported
frost there, while at Redding, Calif.,
( the temperature was 72 at sunrise, so

perlty of Douglas county, as was cvl
denced by the thousands of well-
dressed people on our streets today.
Nearly nil of them went to the circus,
too the biggest travelling show on
earth, for the price of admission.
Even the District Fair Orounds
were Oiled with campers Thursday
night, who had come from a distance
to aee the circus. It Is estimated that
one hundred teams came over from
Coos county. Then the trains from
both north and south were crowded
until standing room was at a prem
ium. Tbey are talking about Its being
an eight billion dollar harvest thU
year, and some people are worrying
whether there will be money enough
to move such a vast amount of crop
to the proper markets. The Inter
state commissioners also predict a big
shortage: In freight cars. No doubt
there Is some cause for concern along
these lines. Hut, after nil, It glvet
one a comfortable sort of feeling tc
think thnt tho crops are so Inrge
that the chief problem Is how to dis
pose of them to the best advantage.
It Is a whole lot nicer to worry about
that sort of thing than to be dlsan-
pointed In the Blze and value of the

office as a Boldler of the I'nlon Army,

PORTLAND, OR., Aug. 26. For
tune is apparently aiding Joe Furey,
ex-convict and confidence man, in his
endeavor to k-ad an honest life. Fur
ey drew No. 1 in the Flathead Indian
reservation drawing. He was born
In Vancouver, Wash., and comenced
his criminal record at the age of 17
years. Furey Is 33 years old now,
and a few years ago announced his
Intention of becoming an upright cit
izen. Although he gave his address as
Warsaw, Ind., ho la now In Seattle,
where he Is employed as a chaffeur.
He was seen there a few weeks ago
by Detective Joe Day, who arrested
him first In 1895, at Coble. Or., on 8
charge of larceny. Furey Is said to
have followed shoplifting especially.
Furey still owes Multnomah coun
ty seven months' Imprisonment, hav
ing been convicted of larceny and es
caping Just before sentence was pro
nounced, forfeiting $1000 ball.
Clarence Furey. the father of the
youth, Is a respected citizen of Van
couver, Wash. Of his five sons. Tom.
Joe and Edward have police records.
One of the sous is traveling for a
wholesale liquor house of Louisville,
Ky. John Furey, another son, died

Idaho, voted "dry" yesterday under
tbe local option law. Canyon county
also voted out saloons by a majority
of 1850. These were the first' local
option elections In the state.
